ATIS and METAR: true or magnetic?

I know this is an old thread, but I found it interesting and wanted to add my limited insight. ACs are written by people, and they are sometimes wrong or outdated. Sometimes regs are not followed, sometimes the charts are not updated with a new tree. Point being trust and use the official docs...

    NoPT for arrivals

I'd be surprised if they are intentionally ignoring deleting a note (given how easy that should be) because of what is really a subjective determination that it wasn't a big deal, especially given how micro detailed they get with approaches and angles, etc. There is already a NOTAM on that plate...

    NoPT for arrivals

I reported the error, interested to see what the response time is.

    NoPT for arrivals

It’s confusing that you can arrive at a large angle and not be permitted to do he procedure turn, and arrive nearly straight on and be required to do one. This is probably related to an old TERPS rule about airway angles, the reasoning of which may or may not still make sense. It is also...

    NoPT for arrivals

I actually don’t understand the note now that I think of it. It sounds like it is saying you cannot take a turn in the hold if you arrive via the now non-existent airway. My understanding is you must take a turn in the hold unless told you are cleared “straight in” which begs the question what...

    NoPT for arrivals

The RNAV 09 at KPCW references a V426 that does not appear to exist. What gives? There were a couple of VORs removed in Ohio, I’m wondering if they removed the VORs and didn’t bother to update the chart? update: it was removed last year, apparently they did indeed simply not update the chart...

    Value of 2 VORs

I thought GLS is only relevant for cat II and III which wouldn’t be applicable to GA? KEWR has GLS approaches but there doesn’t seem to be any news on GLS since those were created years ago. I’m hoping for more RF legs for GA. KEGE and some other mountain airports out here could use them and the...

    Value of 2 VORs

That’s interesting, hadn’t thought of that. Ideal candidate for GLS.

    Another gps question

As was noted above the only difference is the CDI scaling, which if you use ForeFlight is fixed at enroute scaling (1 dot = 1nm) which is pretty coarse but should be still very usable and valuable for training purposes on an LNAV approach. You won't be able to get a feel for tracking an LPV or...

    Temperature, density altitude, and performance

I was referring to most NA airplanes being able to maintain 75% power up until around 7,000ft DA or so.

    Temperature, density altitude, and performance

Engines don’t always develop less power in thinner air. Turbocharged engines aren’t affected much, nor are non turboed engines below about 7000 ft (at cruise power settings). Turbine engines actually generate more thrust at higher altitudes. Propeller pitch can be increased to maintain thrust...

    Temperature, density altitude, and performance

Denser air requires more work to move through, so it's not better if by better you mean faster.

    Temperature, density altitude, and performance

Well, maybe I still don't understand it. I won't hijack the thread but there is another on the forum about this.

    Temperature, density altitude, and performance

I struggled with this also. The thing that helped was considering a balloon that is inflated and comparing it to a steel tank. Assume you inflate a balloon to some pressure. If you increase the temperature in the balloon, the pressure remains about the same because the balloon expands with the...

    Value of 2 VORs

Hints? They are literally dismantling the VOR system. No new ILSs are being installed. I can’t imagine Garmin would get any benefit from using either.

    Value of 2 VORs

Regarding VOR checkpoints, if you’re not using it on a flight (if you have GPS you usually would not be) you don’t need to check it. Clearly a WAAS GPS is more accurate to test against than an additional VOR, and I can’t imagine anyone getting busted on testing against it.

    Indicated vs actual altitude

Awesome, I could not find that reference despite searching through the manual. Where is that located? So what is the altitude the controller is seeing on his screen with an ADS-B aircraft? Is the primary reason to use the altimeter setting given by the controller then to ensure everyone is...

Winter Oil? Do you guys switch to a "Lighter" Oil in the winter?

I see the benefit of multigrade when the temps drop, I don’t see much benefit in the single grade when they don’t. Continental advises against switching oils in their latest SIL: http://www.tcmlink.com/pdf2/SIL19-04.pdf Continentals letter is light on data, but I think the idea is certain oils...

    Value of 2 VORs

KBUR has an LP but no LPV, but agreed they are almost non-existant. A couple others that I recall last year having no LPV now do. That said, ATC around here often just assigns the ILS and you need to ask for the LPV. If it’s MVFR you feel like a pain for requesting the RNAV, not a big deal, but...
