    Chasing Helium Balloons

Have you guys ever heard the tragic story of Balloonfest ‘86? They set a world record for the largest balloon release, 1.5 million of them. The weather did not cooperate and chaos ensued. The pictures are epic, though. https://www.forgottenhistory.me/disaster/1986-cleveland-balloon-disaster

Best Plane To Buy With 1k Useful Load Under 100k$

I put the 900lb number into a P model I fly and it barely works with half fuel and almost zero baggage, mostly due to CG. I tried it in an S model and I couldn’t make it work.

Best Plane To Buy With 1k Useful Load Under 100k$

I think volume might be as big a concern as useful load here. An older Bonanza would haul it, but it wouldn’t be comfortable and CG would be iffy. I’d almost start thinking about a Lance, but that’s probably at least a third over the budget.

Which plane is a better fit??? (Toga vs A36)

We’re all family. We bring collection devices and soldier on. I used to plan breaks, but every time as we approached it I’d ask if anyone needed the stop no one ever wanted to stop, so eventually I just quit planning the stops.

Which plane is a better fit??? (Toga vs A36)

10-15 knots is about right. If you’re flying into a headwind, though, that 30 minutes can get stretched because the slower plane is spending more time in the headwind. Also, the Bonanza has the D’Shannon tips so it can skip the fuel stop on that 1000 nm trip if the passengers are so inclined...

Which plane is a better fit??? (Toga vs A36)

My club has both a Saratoga and an A36. My family is similar to yours, three young kids. For what it’s worth, my wife will pick the Bonanza every time. She would rather get there faster and deal with the smaller cabin than take the speed hit of the Saratoga. An additional factor is that ours is...

    Airplanes with friggin’ lasers

Apparently FedEx is asking the FAA for permission to add anti-missile laser defenses to its A321s. Buried at the bottom of the article is a statement that American Airlines was part of a trial for the technology...

How do I run power to detached garage?

I don’t see it being impossible, but it could become economically disadvantageous. Two meters means you pay the fixed cost of your electric bill twice for what might turn out to be a tiny amount of electricity consumed. We had a similar problem with our HOA. It exists almost solely to maintain...

    masks and glasses

Figured I’d take a shot at answering the question rather than criticizing it. The trick I’ve found is to make sure the mask is high enough that the top of it actually overlaps with the bottom of the glasses, and then make the wire as tight as possible. This means that any breath that gets out...

How soon would you fly a club plane after engine overhaul?

I’m not sure what kind of use the plane normally sees, but the restrictions that come with a new overhaul generally aren’t friendly to pattern work or maneuvers and are more friendly to cross countries. It could be that the students that would ordinarily book are avoiding for that reason. It...

Flightaware times vs. Flight plan times

I’m on an iPhone. For me it’s under Settings -> Flight Times.

Flightaware times vs. Flight plan times

FlightAware lets you pick whether you want to display gate or runway arrival times. The default is gate time. I’d bet switching it to Runway would make it line up.

    IATA Identifiers.

Marco Island Executive has the same situation where the IATA and ICAO codes don’t match. In this case it’s because the three character version of its ICAO code was already assigned to another airport, so they had to choose something different. It looks like the LOM IATA code is assigned to...

    Checkride without Foreflight?

I did my Private ride before ForeFlight, so I was using paper. I used ForeFlight for my instrument ride. I’ll be the contrarian here and say that you should train in the manner that you intend to fly after you get your license, and the DPE will expect that. So if you intend to use paper for...

Straightest flights - takeoff to cruise to landing

This doesn’t score well because of the short distance, but it’s the straightest leg I can remember flying. Depart KCLE, runway 6R heading 058 On course heading 058 for 10 miles Land KBKL runway 6L, heading 065.

    IFR Approach Debate

Well, I learned something today. I wasn’t familiar with that in the 7110.65 and didn’t pick up on the context from @coma24’s post. I concede the point.

    IFR Approach Debate

AGNSS isn’t an IAF. There is no IAF for this approach. You can’t get on this approach apart from vectors to final. It was a mistake for the controller not to issue the vector.

    IFR Approach Debate

Actually, this is Newark so it should be easy to figure out. What time was this, we can find it on LiveATC.

    IFR Approach Debate

That’s what I thought until I looked at the chart. There’s no course reversal and there’s a note that radar is required for the procedure entry. There’s no way to get on the procedure except vectors to final. So, he was on vectors to final, they just forgot to give him a vector.:dunno:

    IFR Approach Debate

My original thought was that, given the phrasing, you wouldn’t be in a vectors to final situation and would be expected to fly the course reversal at AGNSS. Then I looked at the procedure and saw that there isn’t a course reversal and the only way to get on the approach is radar vectors. I...
