    DOGE and the FAA

Sure. It's not that the people who work in government are incompetent or lazy. The question is whether or not the jobs that they do are really necessary, and whether or not those functions are worth what we spend on them.

    DOGE and the FAA

In terms of checking the boxes? Not much. However, how many times does a GP get wrapped up in a discussion over relevance of a 40-year old traffic offense or a childhood prescription for a specific drug? There's a lot of stuff that AMEs deal with that I would wager most docs never give a...

    DOGE and the FAA

The problem with this is that it assumes that all doctors know what the skills and physical requirements are for piloting. I've met some docs who may be perfectly competent in their specialty, but who would have no clue about how to evaluate someone for fitness as a pilot. I also know an eye...

    Where should a beginner start???

Welcome aboard! Three suggestions (already covered above, but I'll pile on): 1) Go ahead and get the Class 3 Medical Certificate out of the way. If there are any issues, you want to know about them immediately, as it can take a lot of time and effort to work around them. If you have...

Balancing Moderation for a Thriving Community

There are plenty of places where you can discuss politics. The problem is that those places become a constant barrage of poo-slinging (have you seen Facebook lately?). That said, any discussion we have on topics like FAA legislation, government regulation of flying, fuel regulations, and...

    What if... Modernizing GA

Precisely, and I don't see how you're ever going to convince a legislature to prevent a jury from finding liability in a trial situation. Like I asked above, has OnStar ever reduced the claims damages amounts for a driver in an equipped vehicle?

    Boeing selling Jeppesen?

I was wondering the exact same thing. They say the estimated price is $6B.

    What if... Modernizing GA

Great starting point. I'm that guy (or at least close to it). Rather than go straight into buying a Cirrus, I decided to go for the training and licensing in a rental plane. After a few months of that, it became clear to me that there were better options for my needs than a new Cirrus. It...

    What if... Modernizing GA

That's not enough. Our government has already clarified that they can and will subpoena this sort of data for whatever purposes they like. The only way to be secure is for that data to not be stored anywhere other than by you yourself. Otherwise, the 4th Amendment does not apply.

    What if... Modernizing GA

Bolded is undoubtedly true, but I think it's the correct answer to the wrong question. The question is: What speed and load combination is acceptable for buyers who have both the desire and enough disposable income to purchase a new plane? Having selected a speed/load combination, how many...

    What if... Modernizing GA

Those prices simply are not possible from any rational perspective, regardless of manufacturing approach. The materials alone today cost multiples of those numbers, before you even start thinking about labor, support, tooling and capital machine amortization, design costs, certification costs...

    What if... Modernizing GA

Sorry, but I'm not seeing it, and the experiential data from similar attempts in other industries doesn't support it. If this worked. we would have seen a massive reduction in accident rates, cost, and price from automotive "nannies" like OnStar. The savings haven't materialized. What we HAVE...

    What if... Modernizing GA

    Bingo - that's the reason for some Euro-built light planes having retractable gear. https://bydanjohnson.com/faster-and-faster-porto-aviations-risen-eclipses-the-400-kilometer-per-hour-barrier/ https://www.shark.aero/ https://www.jmbaircraft.com/VL3 https://www.blackwing.aero/...

    What if... Modernizing GA

Agreed. Our legal system encourages the plaintiff's attorneys to file against any and every possible defendant, for as much as they can possibly request in damages. From a practical perspective, they are going after the deepest pockets to try to collect as much as a jury or settlement proposal...

    What if... Modernizing GA

For some characteristics, sure. However, I think that there are a few areas where "better" can be viewed objectively. For example: 1) Reliability. 2) Cost and frequency of maintenance. 3) Fuel consumption (assuming equal performance). 4) Usable lifespan. 5) Initial cost. 6) Safety. Any...

    ACS Standards Question

That's exactly the way I was taught. Target the 1000' ft markers on a 4300ft runway, be able to pull off safely and smoothly into the taxiway at midfield.

    Instrument training…

This was in an Arrow with 430W and G5s, so yes I can see the difference between heading and course....but when you suddenly see it for real at 500 AGL it drives the point home in a hurry. The new-to-me Bo doesn't have the G5s, just the 430W and steam gauges. I sense a panel upgrade in the very...
