Battery exploding *sounds* like a sudden dead short, which is possible if the alternator output stud rotated into something grounded. The spike may have lasted long enough the battery gave it up before the breaker could pop. Just guessing. Would hate to have to clean that mess up!

14.6 sounds fine to me, not outside the limits of sanity. I would double check that the battery is installed and connected with correct polarity, though I should think something would be letting smoke out if the polarity is reversed. lights, starter and believe it or not some generators won't...
