Please! Make it stop! (Stock market crash)

Exactly. I teach an Adult-Ed investing class and I tell students who are in the accumulation phase to rejoice when there are market declines. Everything is on sale. For those who are paying a significant portion of their living expenses from their portfolios it is a little more complex. As...

Thought about a Lotus...and bought one!

Yes. That opening for the damned driver really screws up the stiffness of the chassis. I drove a FF Swift for about ten years and ended up adding a "gusset plate" (per SCCA rules) to tie the top two tubes on each side of the driver opening together. Whether it helped I don't know for sure but...

Thought about a Lotus...and bought one!

Oh, the real one. I don't remember the model year but I owned it in the early or mid-1970s. I don't remember exactly when I sold it but the next toy car was a 289 Cobra. I just watched "Ford Vs Ferrari." "Shelby" was driving my car! More memories.

    What a bunch of wusses...

Ever been out there?? I didn't think so.

    What a bunch of wusses...

Actually, not. At least from my experience racing sports cars on road tracks for 15 years. A properly designed track does not collect water in any broad sense. The track is crowned and banked (for the roundy-round cars, mostly banked) so that it drains. To the extent there is garbage and...

Not only that, but they only know how to turn left. Bernie should love it!

When to make offer- before or after pre-buy?

Before, but the written version of the offer says something like: " ... offer is contingent on a pre-buy inspection verifying that the airplane has no defects that could affect its value." Or a similar escape clause that lets you walk for any reason. Nobody is going to take you to court if you...

    Parboil chicken before grilling

Yes, SV is a whole different game. It takes longer to cook and you can add butter, spices, etc. to the bag before cooking. You can even brine ahead of SV if you like. When you're done, the chicken is fully cooked. Maybe something like this...

    Parboil chicken before grilling

With respect, this is not the chicken's fault. It is an indication that your fire is too hot. Start with less enthusiasm. It's easier to add charcoal if necessary but if you have too much heat you can kill some coals with a spray bottle of water.

    Parboil chicken before grilling

I don't know a serious cook who would take chicken to 160, despite that old USDA recommendation. I hedged a little bit recommending 150. For myself I would probably look for 140 or 145, then let the chicken rest for a while which will raise the internal temps a few degrees. The key is clear...

    Parboil chicken before grilling

Depends on what you want, I guess. Typical brine is done overnight so the salt and flavors have a chance to diffuse into the meat. So this recipe won't get you that. Cooking ahead of time will, as you say, reduce time on the grill. Said another way, it will reduce the amount of flavor that...

    magnetic compass.. for car?

I have a KI-13 MIG-21 compass mounted on the windshield of my truck. It doesn't have much practical use but I like it. (https://auction.catawiki.com/kavels/9727797-magnetic-compass-ki-13-for-a-jet-fighter-mig-21-ussr-20-th-century) At one point, quite a few years ago, there was a lot of this...

    Would you bag this flight?

In general, I think a good indicator for canceling a flight is when the thought "It'll probably work out." floats into your mind.

    Selecting a Headset

It depends a little bit on what you mean by "quieter." Clarity used to have some hearing laboratory test results on their web site comparing an ANR headset with the Clarity. The ANR set did a better job reducing low frequency noises but up on the important frequency ranges where human speech...

The "Pink Shirts" - how ATC works at AirVenture

Actually, I had a controller friend who went to OSH every year as a supervisor. She had hilarious stories, mostly about what happened on their side of the microphone. One of them I remember ended: " ... and then he completely lost it. I took the mic and got things straightened out." She was...

    [NA] inheritance for kids?!

With respect, sir, I'll make another couple of suggestions: First, develop an estate plan that includes a testamentary special needs trust for your son and, until you get all that money packed away, carry plain vanilla term insurance to fund the trust. That way your son will be covered even if...
