9B1 Another airport bites the dust

Amazingly enough, the vast majority of the planes there do fly. I can only think of two or three true derelicts. All pavement is less than three years old, and there’s a great restaurant, training and maintenance, instrument approaches and new LED lighting, and an active culture. A stark...

9B1 Another airport bites the dust

This has been coming for a while. The combination of short length and close trees made for limited utility. According to locals, the chain link fence never let one through to the road - I got to witness a Cherokee end up in the fence once! Most tenants have fled to either 6B6 or nearby Crow...

    Almost a House Flambe

We learned pretty quickly (before I moved here, honestly) not to hire anyone who did the initial build. Good point, though. I'll keep an eye open for nicked wires.

    Almost a House Flambe

We live in a fairly modern townhouse association of which I’ve been president for a few years, as well as de facto engineer - I get pinged every time something weird happens. We’ve had three hot outlets over the past year, amongst 16 units. No real damage but it’s starting to get concerning. I...

    Rent or Own before IFR?

I don't recall the exact numbers, but I got my complex (and started my IR) in a pretty nice Arrow III that a friend owned - the insurance cost increases over the Cherokee 180 we had before that were incremental in terms of total cost of ownership. The advice about not worrying about full fuel...

There is lost/mishandled luggage... but this just about tops them all

Ha. Having purchased human hearts for research, I'd bet that this was a research shipment. Given transplant viability timelines (and the limited number of hearts appropriate for transplant), no one is missing that delivery....

    Rent or Own before IFR?

What are you planning on owning? I say train for the plane you plan on owning. Insurance is a small part of the total cost of ownership; the portion attributable to not holding an IR is even smaller.

    Single engine planes for fiki

To be clear - I'm not objecting to the general idea; I just don't have the experience (my friend is flying pt 135). Maybe someday - I only have 25hr or so in Cirrus, and I can't/won't really test the limits as our SR22 is non-FIKI.

    Single engine planes for fiki

I don't know much about the TKS options for the Mooneys, but I'm pretty sure that TKS offers a non-FIKI option for the series. Cirrus - pretty sure that everything since 2009 with TKS (most have it) is FIKI. 2008 and older is "precautionary only". Easy ways to tell: - FIKI has protected Vstab...

    Harbor Freight for tools?

Garagejournal has pretty extensive "HF good/junk" threads. It's item-by-item. I love the storage, but wouldn't buy hand or power tools there. Some other stuff is decent; inexpensive air compressors and the like.

    Hang gliding anyone??

So, in practice, the carabiner is at the harness end, and it can't be seen by the pilot? I hope I'm misinterpreting. There are varying practices in climbing, but the trend is towards minimizing steps, particularly those that require disconnection from the system. I can't imagine a step that...

    Hang gliding anyone??

Holy $#^%! Is the tether permanently affixed to the harness? Is this something that you can check as a passenger? I've been climbing for a long time and missing this sort of check is inexcusable. I've done a couple of tandems (ultralight tow) and some beach-bluff lessons; would love to do...
