    Teardrop Pattern Entry

Somehow the FAA advisory (general guidance!) for the apriority entry from the upwind side got turned into a pattern maneuver - it's not. It shouldn't be done close to the airport, and descending into a leg of the pattern (in a turn) while making pattern calls not in the pattern, well, poor form...

    <NA> Motorcycle photo thread

Got back into bike after a 6+ year break. I've always wanted one of these (KTM 690 SMC), and I have a short commute to my business and the airport now, on backroads. Somewhat a COVID boredom purchase, low interest rates, smoking deal. I wanted something with track ready suspension and brakes and...

I don't know too much about the specific bikes, but the Monotube is a cartridge upgrade while the Racetech is an emulator kit, well, emulates a cartridge damper in the damper rod environment. Honestly, a bit of turd polishing. You can make improvements to damper rods but a good cartridge will be...

    For Sale 2009 Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 $4000

Same. A while back, I rode one of these, the SM 610, and the Hyper (and a Tuono, though it's a different category). The Husky was a ticking time bomb, the Hyper too expensive. These were awesome but hard to find. I ended up with a converted DR-Z for a few years that never quite worked. I did...

    Thinking about a rental property

Both of my siblings are “accidental” landlords - bought the crash in 2009 for places to live post-college, and each bought another similar place two years later, moving to single-families a few years after that. Given the increase in values in the Boston area in the past ten years, they’ve both...

Time in type for insurance - SR20 vs SR22

I don't believe that the underwriting is sophisticated enough to see the association between an SR-20 and an SR-22. One of our partners had 300+ SR20 (he had owned one prior) and I didn't get the impression that it impacted the rates at all - we were all PPL-IR with recent experience and...

Time in type for insurance - SR20 vs SR22

No. There may be a marginal savings if you have a decent amount of -22 time, but nothing close to what it will cost to do the rental. Keep proficient and save some dough for the purchase process... you're gonna need it.

    Learned a lesson today

Same! Kiss a few more frogs and you'll find one. Silly market right now.

Was it sitting before the cam work, or before the current owner bought it (after the cam work)?

    Learned a lesson today

I can’t imagine that I’m the only one thinking “this could be worth another hour sifting through the logbooks”. The engine needs closer inspection (and perhaps a call to the engine shop) but these items sound somewhat normal for an older bird. No W+B is odd, agreed, so it does warrant concern...

When else would one text? The rest of the flight is busy taking selfies and announcing straight-in finals.

Ah, thanks. We needed one! Gotta have someplace to put my beer when I'm updating databases.

Does anyone own a Diamond DA-40

Owned 1/4 of one for a few years and put almost 200hr on it. There’s not much I can say that hasn’t been said here - useful load is a limitation and the wings will be tight in standard hangars. I didn’t find comfort an issue, nor landing it. Access was great and cargo area useful (full-sized...

What knot for the ground end of the rope?

I've been climbing for 25 years and grew up sailing. I use camlock straps (NOT ratchet straps) when on the road (keep a set in the plane). Easy to adjust. I'd use a bowline if using ropes. If you want to use ropes and are knot-ically challenged, why not use the same knot you use at the top?

    Tempest Oil Filter Mess

I've found that a strap wrench will get most balky filters, even better if you can pair it up with a socket on top.

    The Other Car

I did like the Alltrack wagons, but stick to Japanese. A newer Mazda3 has great technology and they're rock solid, and may be available in a stick. Wife has a Tiguan that has aged well but is a maintenance monster. We have a good indie shop and I take care of the small stuff. Engine melted...
