    In-Flight Mag Checks

So is using carb heat for a rough running engine. But it can be used all the time in cruise flight if you have a temp probe. Thats not in the normal ops checklist.

    In-Flight Mag Checks

It is also in the Piper Comanche POH. Lets see that hat eating contest!

    In-Flight Mag Checks

Nope, maybe I should've elaborated my plan in the already long post i did. Replaced the damaged wire on #5 cylinder and since Surefly recommends a new harness with their setup, replace all wires with new. Since my other mag is getting close to the 500hr, I'll send it off to Kelly Aerospace to...

    In-Flight Mag Checks

I disagree. The engine needs to have its ignition system working perfectly at altitude and leaned. This will not show up on a runup at full mixture and 2000rpm. Hence the reason to inflight mag checks. I have had this exact problem the last few months on my Comanche with a -540. I noticed that a...

    COVID Vaccine (2)

Are you just making this up? I work for the FAA and you certainly can get the vaccine. You are grounded for 48hrs after each injection that are 21 days apart. So if you can spare 4 days of your time, then you can get it.

    AV20S AoA function?

I guess I'm just interested in how accurate it is. I don't "need" anything for my plane since it's loaded with avionics but trying to find myself a Christmas gift! The Comanche is very speed sensitive on landing, especially at different weights.

    AV20S AoA function?

Anyone use the AV20S primarily as an angle of attack indicator? I’m curious how accurate it can interpolate the AoA by using just pitot/static inputs.

Planes that should have been built

The Airplane Factory already beat them to the punch with the Sling TSI. They are also going to be the only high wing, four seat, rotax 915 powered kit plane.

Plane to Buy - Long Term Planning

I know everyone wants to throw their plane in the mix, so I'll do the same. Comanche 250/260. I have $80K ish in ours and we have full glass (no vacuum pumps), WAAS, ADS-B in/out, and full axis GPSS autopilot. Exceeds all your requirements but loses points due to the single door. It's designed...

    G5 software update

Mine has the battery draw too. Originally it was just my HSI that would lose about 15% battery a week if not flown. Now my PFD is doing it too. They are about 1.5yrs old

    Pipistrel Panthera

Sweet, they drew a route around Kansas City.... Man, stir the pot and fly that thing to the Wichita area (maybe Stearman 1K1). It’d be cool to rub a new design in the face of Cessna and Raytheon. I would fly my nearly 61yr old Comanche down there for lunch and to see how it stacks up to the new...

Relatively low-maintenance airplanes that have decent cross-country performance?

I agree. I think the M20C is a great airplane and a close second to “the plane I own”. For the same price as a M20C you can get a 250 Comanche. The sweet spot is the 1960 with manual flaps. They were designed by Al Mooney working for Piper, the NACA airfoil is nearly identical (so the wing is...

Relatively low-maintenance airplanes that have decent cross-country performance?

Eh, I disagree. If you are not behind on the maintenance, I’ve found the Comanche is the most reliable plane I’ve ever flown. Although it is a complex plane, my partner in the plane and I have had 100% dispatch reliability over the last 4yrs of owning it and it’s a 9000hr airframe. Before the...

    New Diamond DA50

I think it’s a very attractive aircraft, in looks and performance. The only thing that made me scratch my head is the massive wingspan, as noted numerous times. Maybe a clipped wing model with winglets for the American market with 2.5ft lobbed off each wing will work. Then again, I could just...

Plane value vs. Personal Net Worth?

When I bought my plane I was still on a 30yr home mortgage with a little credit card debt, two car payments and student loans. I don’t buy the whole “if you finance it you can’t afford it” thing. Our plane had a short term 5yr loan on it and we paid it off a year and a half early. Less than a...

Plane value vs. Personal Net Worth?

I agree! This virus has allowed me to “social distance” on the sailboat and the mahogany speedboat. I installed a pump out head on my Hunter 27-2 (originally had a cassette head). Tons of wood work done on both boats. Been getting a lot of complements at the dock! My boat friends often ask about...

    Boats, Planes, and Taxes

Being a multiple boat owner (Hunter sailboat and custom built 23ft mahogany runabout), I too am shocked by the prices of new wakeboarding boats. I’m even more blown away on how much tax money these “toys” generate. In my state boats have a nearly 11% sales tax rate and you pay property tax every...

    What if? Theoretical GNX375 failure

Not an emergency situation if you are in radar contact (which you probably will be). Instead of being a /G you just tell ATC that you lost your GPS and they will know that you lost your transponder because they will have a "primary only" target on you. Losing GNSS and Transpoder No Mode C turns...

Try AIA by Duncan. I would bet they’d be way lower than that. http://www.airduncan.com/
