Taking my Mentor (Dad) For a Flight Today

noun informal noun: meatspace; noun: meat-space the physical world, as opposed to cyberspace or a virtual environment. "I'd like to know a little more before we talk about a get-together in meatspace" Why it's called "meat" space should be obvious. :)

    Flight Simulators

For $100, I got 'em just to make taxing easier. Also, on the carenado mooney, applying full power on take off requires rudder from somewhere to counteract the yawing. I guess you could do that with the keyboard, but...

Passed the IR written today...what a ridiculous test.

I can probably get proficient at any skill, but VORs are ancient tech. It's unlikely we'd design them today if we were starting over. For the time (1950s?) fine. But the only purpose for them remaining that's at all persuasive is as a ground based back up to GPS. And even then, they suck. Bring...

Instrument Training: Who got training from their CFII in actual IMC?

lol. I know exactly what you mean. I tend not to think in terms of distance, but time.

A noob with a headset question.

If airplane's were car-quiet, you'd only care about the mic quality (well, mostly). But airplanes are loud, and after a few hours in my plane, my ears were ringing for days with the old headset. I PROTECT my hearing, so I bought the ANR headset that night. :) Cost of the airplane has nothing to...

    Flight Simulators

Hey, challenged... you seem to have some experience with this. I have (had, took it apart to "fix" it) the eclipse yoke. It's fine, but I can't get x-plane to dial back the sensitivity as much as I want. I took the yoke apart to see how hard it would be to build something that would let me...

Wonder how many of us are here because few if any meatspace people will talk / fly with us. Me, for one.

    Please Assist.

That's huge, and something a few others on here have done (well, not flight attendent necessarily). Good luck.

    Flight Simulators

Yeah, what he said. Except. I found the flight simulator very useful when trying to learn to fly on instruments. A sim won't help you much (IMHO) until you start on your instrument rating.

Passed the IR written today...what a ridiculous test.

Well, they are and they aren't. I mean, fundamentally, the equipment is measuring an angle. That's all you get, unless it has DME. But for now, just assume 'angle'. That's all you have. There IS NO OTHER INFORMATION. Simple, right? I still don't have a good mental model for quickly answering...

Enjoy guys. It's really special. I wish I could do that, but neither parent likes flying. Hope you have some way to "go pro" it. Video like that will be nice to have later.

    Flying vids Facebook served up

The video is great. But... why would those same guys follow each and every one and take a ton of pics. How many pics do you need of the top of a plane against a green background? I'd go and eat lunch and -watch-. Sound must be pretty intense too.

Poor sailboat. Please tell me that's not going out with the trash.

    A new beginning.

Doesn't it? Welcome home. :) I was amazed how much I retained. Not perfectly, but not like starting over.

wanted... inop steam gauge instruments for "paper weights"

Is there a magic word to use to find things that aren't $$$? I did actually look before consulting lazyweb, but in 30 seconds or so couldn't seem to eliminate the expensive ones. (Yeah, I guess I could filter by price. Just seems like there should be a #ornament tag or something. )

    Old post.

Also, I can sort of see an image like the vietnam memorial one, where the guy's leaning on the black stone and his buddies are in the reflection looking back... Every wreck that hurt / killed someone affected a bunch of other people connected to the directly injured. Their ghosts surround the...

Not defending the guy, but a wreck on a stick as you walk out onto the ramp might encourage some sober ADM.

Heh. I was talking about myself actually... no way I'm gonna read the entire thread to see if someone already bitched about what I was bitching about. :)
