US submarines leap forward in quietness

For my money the movie that most accurately depicts the personal dynamics of the wardroom is “Crimson Tide”. The plot is nonsense of course but for a while I thought one of my old skippers had coached Hackman, I mean he nailed his megalomania. The scene where the Xo mentions to the CO to back...

Can you jump a 12V plane battery with a car?

I used to jump my plane when the battery was going. Used regular jumper cables and tied the cowling down with a rope so it wouldn’t flap around when the engine started. Didn’t try to detach while it was running, just got it hot and ran it for five minutes or so, and then shut down, buttoned...

Thank you, just put a hold on it on Libby.

    Boeing’s on a streak...

This might be from the same news source--here is a quote I find literally incredible: "To date, we still do not know who performed the work to open, reinstall, and close the door plug on the accident aircraft," Homendy wrote to Sens. Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz. "Boeing has informed us that...

A letter from the Southeast United States

Personally I do not understand how someone could spend their entire adult life somewhere and then sell up and move thousands of miles away when they retire. My sister did that, 30+ years in S California then they moved to TN, 2000 miles from their kids and grandchildren. I plan on staying where...

Dealing with a crisis(?) of confidence

Just want to second, third, thirteenth what everyone else said: it’s normal, and the more you fly the more comfortable you will be. Also, adding this: As I age (nearing 4000 hours and age 63) I find myself questioning myself more, “Did I put the oil cap back on?” That sort of thing. To combat...

Stairway to Heaven - Not the Song

South Face Washington Column. We did it in good style, got up to Dinner ledge the first day then did the two pitches above and fixed ropes, jumared up those the next day and at the top by 1

Stairway to Heaven - Not the Song

Has anyone hiked Angels Landing in Zion National Park? I have done several big walls in Yosemite, used to lead 5.9 pretty solid, and I am not ashamed to admit that Angels was scary. There are rails in places but you go out on an arete for maybe a quarter mile that is only several feet wide in...

    Customs trouble

My family and I returned from a Caribbean cruise and had docked in Miami, everyone had sat for hours waiting to deboard and then we all had to stand near our luggage in a big hangar-like place with no air conditioning while customs officials cleared us. I handed the Customs officer (a large...

    This flying seems awfully expensive...

Rental property. Not a panacea but it helps. Here are some rough numbers: rent a place on the water next to an airstrip. Roughly $10k a year spent flying, half of which is to the property to collect rent, maintenance etc. At 40% combined federal and state tax, that’s $2000 in real dollars saved...

Masters of the Air--coming to Apple TV

I agree. I am enjoying it immensely. It is not a documentary and if you are the type of person who is concerned they didn’t use the correct torque spec for that bolt for that particular model of left- handed nose inhalers in that time period, well, this show is not for you. I love it and many...

Masters of the Air--coming to Apple TV

Did anyone watch the episode tonight? Why won’t my A&P ride on my engine and fix my magneto timing as I taxi? No dedication these days.

    Air-to-Air Piper Tomahawk

I would like to endorse this little plane. It holds 32 gallons, 30 usable.. At 6 gph I fly 350m + legs with a huge safety margin. Mine is stripped pretty light and I have 350 pounds payload with full tanks, enough for my wife and I. The back can only hold 100 pounds but it is huge, carry a large...

    Air-to-Air Piper Tomahawk

I guess? Don’t really know, just fly it. My AP takes care of all the ADs. It flies good.

    Air-to-Air Piper Tomahawk

Have owned a Tomahawk for 30 years, put about 3600 on it so far. Honestly have no idea what anyone is talking about concerning stalls, wing deformation, etc. Maybe I’m not a good enough pilot to notice but it flies just fine for me. I think the plane’s biggest problem is the internet

using available weather data to determine "VFR on top" possibilities

Ha ha yeah! Vfr over the top is vfr, find a hole, pretty much what i have been using common sense to do to stay alive. Vfr on the top is weirdly named IFR. Got and thanks for the gut check, appreciated.
