    Airspeed for downwind

At what speed to you fly the downwind leg in a 172? I just had a solo evaluation flight. I'm on instructor #3 (no drama, they just keep leaving :) ). He was horrified at me flying the downwind leg of the pattern at 100 kias. I was sure that instructor #2 recommended this. I remembered him...

I'm French and I'll come to USA

Congrats on the DV lottery! I can't answer your questions, but whatever you do, make sure you get your TSA Alien Flight School Program application sorted before you expect to start any kind of training other than ground school. As far as I know, no flight school in the US can give you any...

Does a steady tailwind “push” an airplane?

It's not that it's not important in cruise - it's that the wind doesn't push on the plane during cruise. It does push on the plane when transitioning between ground and air because the plane is accelerating or decelerating relative to the air.

Does a steady tailwind “push” an airplane?

"Push" implies force. In fact someone explicitly said that the air exerts a force on the plane: I don't think this is correct. When the air first meets the plane, it pushes the plane, causing the plane to accelerate in that direction...until the plane is moving at the same speed as the air. At...

    Disappointed

Yes, but you didn't really have any way of knowing that. Lots of people make it sound like it's no big deal, because it wasn't for them. I was given the impression by my instructor and others that it's "easy" to get a medical certificate, "practically anyone" can get one etc. etc. Yes, it's...

    Flight Simulators

The FBO I am learning to fly with has one of these. I got to use it a couple of times, and as a pre solo student I found it next to useless, for the reasons most people have stated - no feel. The visibility isn't the same either. During pattern practice I can't tell when to make the base turn...

Can the engine start in the opposite direction?

I'll just leave this here...http://www.mejor.com/356/maestro/stories/912crank.html What are the odds lol? How many manufactures make engines with interchangeable starters that run in opposite directions? And then there's this: Of course that still won't make the engine run in reverse, but...

Stop training to wait for medical?

Well the wait is finally over. I ended up stopping the training for quite a while - first my instructor left and then I got a letter from the FAA asking for more tests. I started to get worried that it might take a really long time, or I might be denied. So I pretty much stopped completely for a...

    Android tablet for Garmin Pilot

I have a free subscription to Garmin Pilot for a year and I'm shopping for an Android tablet to use it with. I'm probably going to go for a Galaxy Tab S2. Does anyone know, how useful is a 3G/LTE connection for this application? I haven't really started my cross country training yet so I'm still...

How can I record Cockpit Video & Audio with iPhone

I use this one with my Android phone (Galaxy S7). It uses a 4 pole jack that they say will work with "any standard smartphone headset jack". I have no idea if it will work with an iPhone but I can vouch for the quality at least. It works perfectly with my phone - the sound comes out crystal...

    Prescription sunglasses

Quite a few votes for Zenni it seems. I think I will go with them - since I probably won't know what's ideal until I have a bit more experience, and they're a pretty small investment all things considered. Does "gradient lens" mean that it's less tinted at the bottom of the lens? Is that a...

    Prescription sunglasses

Good point...I discovered that myself a few weeks ago. I have been wearing a cheap pair of sunglasses that I assumed were just tinted. During the final checks before takeoff one day I asked my instructor why the transponder was turned off. He replied, it's not - you have polarized glasses. I...

    Prescription sunglasses

I discovered at my recent medical exam that I have to wear glasses while flying. It caught me by surprise because I don't normally wear them for anything. But luckily I went to see an optometrist last year and got glasses to help me with target shooting, so that saved me some hassle in the exam...

    What causes stalls?

So much this. Sure you can find the scientific explanation elsewhere, but what this book does differently is it helps you to build an intuitive mental model of how a wing flies and stalls. I didn't realize how much I was confusing attitude with angle of attack until I started reading this book.

I Don't Want to Step on Any Toes...

I'm in Indy too. I don't know if any of this helps, but: the private sky-vu club (http://www.sky-vu.org/faqs/) state in their FAQ that members can bring in their own instructor to train in the club planes. Also, where I fly (Indy Regional) there are definitely some instructors that are "by...

    Gopro question.

I'm not sure - I have the original Hero and it doesn't record audio from a line-in source - only the built in mic. However, using this cable I have been recording the audio on my phone and syncing it later. That cable does work directly with certain GoPro models that support audio in over usb.

    Recording lessons - recommendation

Well I finally got around to trying this. The first gen GoPro does indeed have this feature, but it didn't make any difference unfortunately. It may be that I didn't have it point downwards enough so it's still exposing for the outside. But I'll keep tinkering with it anyway...
