    Equity based clubs

I'm thinking about alternatives to renting once I get my PPL, and I started reading some info on the website of a local club. It mostly makes sense to me, but there's one thing I don't get: it says that each member owns an equal share in the club's assets, but that a share is "generally acquired...

Some questions before I go in to take my 3rd class medical

Yes: read post #7 here. Do not just walk into a medical exam without being 100% sure you are going to be issued.

    "Bugging" Your Heading

I use it constantly (student pilot). My instructors have all encouraged me to use it and now I don't think I can manage without it! * if I get several ATC instructions including a heading, bugging it is easier than writing it or memorizing it. * if I have to correct for the wind to stay on a...

    FAA approch to dual-DUI

This. To me, the US seems to have a bizzare attitude to alcohol, and this comment sums it up perfectly. If a person drove a car 80 times while reading a novel, would you say they had a problem with books? Or just a problem behaving responsibly in general? I don't see why alcohol suddenly...

ATIS and METAR: true or magnetic?

Wouldn't you want this when you're planning a flight with a chart? The chart is base on true directions. You have to adjust your final course calculation for magnetic deviation anyway, so the simplest approach is to have the wind as a true direction.

    Preflight Gloves

Up here in Indiana you use gloves if you want to still be able to feel your fingers after preflight!

    Nervous about flying

I was the same way. It fades if you keep doing it. Now I'm starting to enjoy it a lot more, but if I go for a while without flying, I have to give myself a little push to get over it again. Same if I go for long periods without feeling turbulence - the first time I feel it it takes a little time...

    Student drug tests

Well it's not for me or anyone else to tell you why you shouldn't want random police searches etc., but for what it's worth I think you have the wrong reasons. You should have a problem with these things because they actually put you in jeopardy, which is infinitely more important than how they...

I now hate Fedex more than I hate the post office!

FedEx are the worst. Once they failed to deliver a package to me, but marked it as delivered, then told me it was lost and they'd get in touch with the driver, and then lost the driver too. I'm not joking, I was getting calls from them for days afterwards saying they couldn't get in touch with...

Interested in East Kansas City area....

It won't be all solo time after your first solo. You have to do a minimum of 10 hours solo, and while it could be more, bear in mind that you have to do at least 3 hours of night time flying, 3 hours of instrument flying iirc, and probably at least a couple of cross countries with the instructor...

    Tablet yoke mount

Does that one block the ports at the bottom of the tablet? I don't think I'll need to use them anyway, but I should probably think about it. Why?

    Tablet yoke mount

I've just started my cross country training and I'm using an 8" Android tablet with Garmin Pilot. I've just had it resting on my lap for the last few flights, but I think I'd prefer to have it mounted on the yoke. I was thinking of buying this but I wanted to see if anyone here has any...

    Fireball meteor...

I'm in Lansing and I saw what looked like lightning around that time. All I saw was one brief flash from the window but that must have been it. I remember thinking it was weird at the time.

    First solo

Just got back from my first solo flight. The tl;dr version is that it was pretty uneventful - but I wanted to post something anyway :) It's been about a year since I started training, and I have over 20 hours logged before my solo. I've had a long list of things getting in the way. At first, it...

    Strange rudder/nosewheel behavior

After landing, I thought the problem was the other way around, i.e. we were still being pushed into the wind and the right rudder seemed weaker. My instructor had a quick look and he didn't think it was as bad. I'm guessing that the weathervaing thing is what was happening, and that the wind...

    Strange rudder/nosewheel behavior

Today I had something odd with the rudder in the 172 I'm training in. The wind was blowing from the south, around 10 kts. We were taxiing east, and I kept drifting off the line to the right (into the wind). It took pretty much full left rudder to get back and stay on the line. I told my...

NA traction control on track driving?

At Porsche club track events, most of the fast drivers leave it turned on. The consensus is that if traction control kicks in, it's because you overcooked it. If you drive optimally, you won't even know it's turned on. Of course, you won't be sliding sideways around corners like Top Gear, but as...

    Looking for "first solo" stories

Not really a first solo story, but this epic story reminded me of your Super Dave story (It's in the first comment below the article under the name Jim Davis)
