Thanks for the insight everyone, just what I was looking for! So is a widespread area of cumulus more than a couple thousand feet thick less concerning than a smaller area that extends 1,000 feet above the rest of the cloud?

As an instrument rated pilot who hasn’t spent nearly enough time in actual IMC yet, I’m curious what people’s tolerances are for going through cumulus clouds vs. asking for a deviation. Is there a general rule of thumb for what is tolerable and safe?

The last I checked this afternoon, the wind chill (-55 F) at KFAR (Fargo, ND) was the same as the temperature at FL450. I think I’ll be keeping the plane in the hangar for the next couple days...not even worth going out there to update the GPS at this point!

Great info everyone, thanks! Unfortunately, after a few days where they’ve probably never even heard of de-ice, I’m back in the cold now. Sounds like the initial delay waiting for “it” to warm up a couple degrees was most likely the fluid itself and not the air temperature.

Maybe the de-ice fluid in the trucks needed to warm up more?? Not likely the air temp will warm up this morning and they just said they were waiting for the temp to rise another 1-2 degrees. I can’t get out of this cold weather fast enough!

I’m currently sitting in the back of a Delta 757 in Fargo, ND and we were just told that the de-ice fluid they have isn’t safe to use until the temperature rises 2 degrees...so apparently we’re stuck on the ground for now. The ASOS is reporting -23C (which is cold, but not bad at all by ND...

Hate to say it, but I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was up there today. The winds were howling and I basically kept the nose pointed at the runway on one downwind leg, but it was a great flying day in NoDak as long as you weren’t flying into the wind. No harm in being safe...

Practice A LOT (until you know there is no chance of you not passing) and then take the test. You’ll never have to worry about it again...ever. And one of the best tips I ever heard was to get it into your head that “green” is simply a “muddy white”. Good luck...you won’t need it if you practice though.

Glad to hear you're getting some actual. As someone who had less than 1 hour of actual when I passed my instrument checkride last year, the first time I was in cumulus clouds riding up and down drafts while not being able to see anything was a pretty humbling experience and got my heart beating...

If anyone else runs into this problem, I talked to them this morning and their system is still down. They are currently trying to fix it.
