    13 INSURANCE COMPANIES

Interesting. Avemco was significantly cheaper than the other quotes I got this summer when buying my new plane.

    Texas Ocassional Sale [Tax Exemption?]

I believe Texas has a fly away exemption for buyers located elsewhere. There is a form to fill out and provide to the seller, but I don't think you need to pay TX sales tax unless the buyer is located there. There are certain rules and restrictions that you should check on though.

    Are Complex Aircraft Obsolete?

I like Piper arrows. I have a bunch of time in them and was a partner in one for several years. They are easy to fly and a great step up from fixed gear pipers. I wanted to buy one, but the market was crazy. People on here mentioned the useful is limited, but I found it to be pretty decent...

    Aircraft financing

I used airfleet capital as well. It was a very good experience.

RG Maintenance - Which are Good, Bad?

The gear motor overhaul was 1amu. I am told the gear rigging is 10-12 hours of labor plus parts. Probably find out next annual.

RG Maintenance - Which are Good, Bad?

I purposely avoided the cessna rgs because of the hydraulic single point of failure gear. Was a partner in an arrow many years. Nice simple gravity drop system if hydraulics fail. I don't remember having any maintenance issues with it. Bought the Bonanza this summer. Nice mechanical system. It...

    What are you flying?

I picked it up at Hooks. This picture was taken on that proud day. I am based in the Chicago area. Good eye though!

    What are you flying?

A 1991 F33a and loving every minute of it. I think it is a fantastic airplane that checks all my boxes. That said my wife and I take time every year to pay homage to the pretty da62 at Oshkosh.

What questions do I ask/watch out for at a flying club?

What is the ratio of active members to planes? If there are 10 for 2 planes it's probably great availability. If it is 100 for 2 planes, it is probably awful. That was the biggest problem I had in my current one. My schedule is crazy so I can't schedule a plane two weeks in advance, but it...

    Pireps on flying into Dayton

I am looking to visit the museum next week. Anyone have any recommendations on where to fly in for the day? Should I just go into KDAY or is there a better option? Anyone know if uber/lyft is active in the area?

    Need headset advice for SO

I echo the DC one-x comments. My wife found them at oshkosh and now she has the most expensive set in the cabin.

Recommendations for airfields near lakes or beaches

I am looking for a hard surface field to fly into and be able to easily get to recreational activities on a lake or hiking, etc. I'd be interested in the central US maybe 600nm radius from Chicago. Years back I found it very cool to fly over to Unionville (K43) and have a paved runway next to...

Where to search, Planes for Sale

Just a note on buying something that needs work. I have recently learned that I'm glad mine doesn't need anything too urgently, because shops are completely booked out right now. Some have hung up on me because they already have all the business they need. I don't want to deter you from a...

    Do I Need a Tug for a 182RG?

I have found it difficult to push my bonanza into the hangar, especially with full tanks. There is a slight grade which makes it more challenging. I am concerned about this winter with the ice. I am definitely looking into a powered tow bar.

Where to search, Planes for Sale

I was in that exact same boat. Luckily, I found a guy selling a hangar about 1 month before I had a guy message me about selling a plane, and it all worked out great. It can be stressful though, especially if you have a certain time to fill the hangar with an airplane after procuring it...

Where to search, Planes for Sale

I second the type forum comments. I got lucky and had someone message me about the f33a they were thinking about selling. Got it before it hit retail or broker, and it is a beautiful thing.

Cell Phone and Data Service at 8,000’? Surprise!

Exactly, except radiated power is 1/4W rms

Cell Phone and Data Service at 8,000’? Surprise!

I think many years back there was a "ping ponging" issue when the phone saw multiple sites at a time and was traveling fast. I tend to remember CDMA having this limitation pretty bad due to soft hand offs. It was primarily a computational limitation i think. Now a days computing power is much...

Cell Phone and Data Service at 8,000’? Surprise!

Was it a rural area? How fast were you going? These are probably some significant factors in how good your cell coverage is at altitude. In denser areas, the cell antennas will tend to have more downtilt or be aimed more at the ground in order to prevent interference with nearby cells. In rural...

    Headset ear pads

I have an old V1-anr headset I bought from Tina's pilot shop many years ago. I kept them around for an aux passenger headset, but the ear pads are falling apart. I did a search but can't find any info about them at all. Does anyone know if I can just buy some generic ear pads for some other...
