    First aviation headset- choice?

The Lightspeed Sierra has served me well for many years. It is around $500 price point with bluetooth and active noise cancellation. Also if you have any issues, Lightspeed will take care of you.

How much do you spend monthly/annually on flying

I figured this out recently. I spend about 2k per month all in if I fly 100 hours a year and nothing major breaks. That does not include any debt service.

    Hershey bar wings and landing

Interestingly, I was in an arrow partnership for several years. It had the Hershey bar wings, and I loved landing it. When I moved and started flying an arrow with the tapered wing, I swear it was impossible to grease it. It is probably more about getting comfortable with one vs. another than...

    Oxygen systems

I had the same thought on the high flying c172. I bought an AirOx for my family trip to AZ over spring break. It worked great for what we used it for. We didn't go too high, but it was warm and I wanted the family to be comfortable. We were up at 10500 and had 4 of us on a D size tank. It is...

    Expanding a Flying Club

While I'm not sure of the specifics of your club arrangement, I can tell you about my experience. I am in a club of 90 people with about 50 active. They claim to have a waiting list of 40 people. We have 4 planes and availability isn't great. If you schedule a week ahead of time and are only...

    Daily Pic

Just finished a big cross country with the family Chicago to Phoenix and back. This was taken yesterday morning in Wichita.

    Mountain Flying VFR/IFR

Awesome! Good to know. I am feeling better about this trip each day.

    Mountain Flying VFR/IFR

KCHD. Figured I would stick to the easier route with the family on-board.

    Mountain Flying VFR/IFR

This is helpful. I am planning a trip to Phoenix this month from Chicago. I was planning to go the low route west of KELP at 10500 early in the morning. I will be on the heavier side in the F33a, but I think it will be fine given decent weather.

Can we talk about the 172?

I was going to say they have so many configurations through the years, they can be pretty different. I have flown a 1964, a 1976, a 2001, and a 2010. The 64 can't get out of it's own way, but the newer ones are quite nice. They are nice for taking pictures and the landings are super easy.

    Supplemental Oxygen changed our flying...

I am planning a long trip out to AZ from IL next month. I would like to buy an oxygen system for when we get to the higher ground. As a flatlander, I see the need for the O2 to be pretty limited. I don't want to spend MH money for the very occasional need, and I would like get something...

    Why are Bonanzas so cheap?

At those prices you are talking about the older ones which come with ruddervator risk and high maintenance costs. I think Bonanzas tend to have perceived high maintenance costs in general. While they aren't cheap to fix, they don't seem to break too much if taken care of. Overall entry level...

    CHTs running cold?

Leaning to clear a plug isn't so much about max heat as it is about creating an Oxygen rich environment for the gunk to burn off in. Running rich would add more excess fuel, lead, and carbon to further gunk things up. Like Martin said, all you need is an engine monitor to run the experiment...

    Partnerships

I think everyone had good advice here. I will say for myself, I look for structure, organization, and things in writing. Almost two years ago I talked to someone about a 1/3 share in an archer, and there was nothing in writing. He couldn't even tell me much about the other owners. I asked how...

    Plane Prices

The problem is that while this is happening, banks are giving loans for 40yr old toy assets and houses at 3-4% rates. Basically the bank takes the inflation hit. Feels like a bubble.

    Owning and Flying Over TBO

This guy is 48-50 across the board which concerned me at first. Like I said though, it makes full power, doesn't use oil, and the oil stays nice and clean. That means there is not excessive blow by or valve guide wear. Good thing because Continental just delayed my 550 another few months!

    Owning and Flying Over TBO

It is definitely tempting, but there is also a core charge I would have to eat. I think it is like $16K if the core isn't returned in 90 days.

    Owning and Flying Over TBO

I bought my Bonanza this summer at TBO. The IO520 is slightly over 1700hrs. Given the ridiculous lead times on everything these days, I went ahead and ordered a IO550 for it. I didn't want it to go belly up and be grounded waiting for a new engine or cylinders. That said, it is running like...

Why do JT-A Diesel pistons have such poor climb performance?

Horsepower is a RPM multiple of Torque. If the DA40-NG is rated at lower HP at the same RPM as the gas motor, the torque must actually be lower than the gas engine - at sea level.
