GA transportation of (personal) firearms and ammo

I think this is a great question and one I have wondered about myself. I think the key is that you meet the legalities of the states and fed laws as you would if transporting by car. It might cause extra scrutiny unloading your cargo at the airport as well.

Hot starts and engine shut downs

Running the fuel pump with mixture cutoff for 30 seconds only works with continental engines. Lycomings don’t return fuel to the tank like continentals.

Talk Me Out of a Cirrus

I was in a flight club with a sr20. The thing was always in the shop. The expensive cirrus certified shop. Literally almost sold it because they couldn’t make money on it being down all the time. I actually wanted a Lance but ended up buying my Bonanza. I would keep the Lance…my $0.02.

    Leaning during climb

I look at it as the hotter the metal is, the softer and more susceptible it is to being damaged. It doesn’t necessarily mean it is toast if it hits 400, but it is probably a good idea to keep it at reasonable temperature to avoid damage. My #4 runs hot and on summer days can hit 408 or so in the...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

They did not have either, which upsets me. Last year the question came up with a textron employee, is the company really supporting the bonanza and they said absolutely there are many orders. Then this year the only beech products were the Denali and king air.

    Leaning during climb

Know what your sea level egt is with full mixture (assuming your fuel flow is set correctly) and lean during climb to keep that egt. That should be the right richness for appropriate climb power. For my bonanza climbing out at 800ft the full mixture egt is a bit over 1300, so during climb I keep...

    I hate this FAR

Oh man I had a similar frustrating experience in Gatlinburg. I guess I’m not the only one. It seems like helicopter pilots think they own the place. I find it stressful flying into there, but I am learning a lot from this thread.

    Bose A20 vs Zulu 3

Just got home from AirVenture and am sick so haven’t been able to try it out. I did the side by side at the sportys tent. The a30 had the best ANR and music sound but not worth 1300 in my opinion. The zulu3 was the best value at 799. The a20 was lighter on the head but they no longer have the...

    Bose A20 vs Zulu 3

My wife just had to have the dc pro x because it was light and didn’t mess up her hair. I am not a DC fan myself. I just bought the zulu3 at osh last week. I wanted the a20 but they don’t have lemo anymore. Bose is good about directing people toward their latest stuff. Maybe that answers your...

    Advice for loooooong cross-country

New Mexico can be brutal mid day. I had to throttle back while crossing out of El Paso due to turbulence. Might be good to have oxygen if you will be flying at 8k+ in the high desert for a while. It will keep you more refreshed. AZ airspace is busy. Enjoy the journey!

Questions on Clearance delivery with a phone number

You don’t need any clearance if you are flying vfr out of a non towered airport. You have to get cleared into bravo real time. The phone number is for when you need an ifr clearance and can’t get radio signal to the control facility.

First plane? Archer, Arrow, etc. any recommendations

Loved my arrow. It was 1975 Hershey bar wing. Solid honest 135knt plane easy to fly and maintain. Like what’s been said, insurance and annual will be 1000 more than an archer, but you build complex time! The arrow is nice and steady during instrument approaches too.

Good place to find quotes on insurance before deciding on a plane?

Yeah I went through that when I bought mine. Apparently you need to use a broker, which I didn’t understand at the time. I used avemco the first year and they were easy and responsive. They were fairly pricy though. Since then I used Kale at American Safeguard, and he has provided better rates.

First plane for family of 5

I think that would be a fine family plane as would an A36. I would strongly suggest getting your IFR before buying a cross country machine like that. It helps with insurance and overall experience. Proficiency and experience is key when flying your family around, plus you can’t always predict...

    Endorsement

I believe this is for insurance purposes only. As far as the fars are concerned, I think they are both single engine land airplanes with fixed gear/prop and less than 200hp.

    Propeller Overhaul Anywhere, Anytime

My shop swears by Tiffin Aire in Ohio. I just had mine resealed / repaired there. I can report back after I get some time on it. Their service was fast and on time. Better than I can say for the altimeter work I had done at a big avionics place.

    Cheap airplane not so cheap

I got a good deal on mine. I knew what I was getting into as the owner was upfront about the tbo engine needing replacement and the results of a very thorough prebuy inspection. It has been a great plane with just a few minor surprises.

    Help me understand Turbo

I was thinking about this before I bought my plane. I think if you will be at higher density altitudes a fair amount, the turbo makes a lot of sense. I am in the midwest, so other than the occasional trip out west, I wouldn't really be taking advantage of a turbo. Most of the time I just putz...

How liquid is a partnership / why don't I see shares for sale?

My guess is that people usually would partner with people they know. As an aircraft owner myself, I would be uncomfortable advertising for a stranger to come fly my plane. I think the key is to network and meet people at the airport, on forums, local fly ins, etc. I know in the flying club I...

    First aviation headset- choice?

Yikes! Maybe I should have bought the Zulu3 at oshkosh for 785.
