    Approach Charts..

I don't know if it is the split display on the mfd or the jepp charts, but i prefer to leave the charts off the display and fly with the faa charts on my ipad. I also learned with an ipad, faa charts and a 6 pack.

    Talkin' to the Tower

The trick for me is two things. 1) to expect certain information in a certain order. If im requesting taxi for departure, i know they'll assign a runway, which i know from atis, and if i look at the taxi diagram I'll know approx taxi instructions. 2) if i don't catch everything, just to...

Training to be a commercial pilot

You can save much more than $10k. More like 50%. Granted, they are starting to train solely in g1000 planes. So maybe you only save $20k if you do all glass for your training.

Commercial Written - Which Ground School ?

I have no idea. They want the request to be within 4 days, but they don't seem to really care when the practice test was done. Really, a major PITA. They also asked me what state I was planning to take my checkride in. What I feel this all boils down to is they have a bunch of people...

Commercial Written - Which Ground School ?

While i think an endorsement to take a test is a silly thing, sheppard will write you an endorsement. Im going thru it right now and It's a royal pita and i believe they're making up "faa rules." For one, they insist on making the endorsement valid for a period time, approx 2 days. I like to...

Is a four year degree still mandatory

My point is it doesnt have to cost $150k+ to get a 4 year degree and go "zero to hero." I apologize if that flew over your head.

Is a four year degree still mandatory

Could be as little as $60k. Could be $0 depending on if g’ma gertie is footing the bill. What’s your point?

    Rapid City / Mt.Rushmore / Crazy Horse

Thanks for the write up. I enjoyed the read. I headed there this summer. I didn’t get to do the fly by, but we did drive to the monument. Got to see some f16s takeoff from krap on the way out. Anyone who comes from any direction but the south gets the “confirm you have krap and not...

    Getting nervous about IFR checkride

You may want to check out this thread on reddit where a user, your friendly asi, supposedly a safety inspector, is talking about it. Here is what he has to say to a doe about what the asi doesn’t think a dpe will be able to continue giving checkrides during the shutdown. “Exactly, you are a...

    Getting nervous about IFR checkride

I'm not sure how the gubimint shutdown affects checkrides, but there is some speculation that DPEs aren't supposed to give checkrides. Hopefully that isnt the case....

    Getting nervous about IFR checkride

Just did mine tuesday. I got freaked out because the same dpe failed a guy at my school the day before on his instrunent ride. Turns out that kid couldn't even intercept and track a radial. One thing i wish my instructor would have worked with me more is the gps. I had a 650 and i was...

Buying a Plane to train in and keep

Im still very low time, 150ish hours. 35 years old. I initially thought i could schlepp my family of 5 over the rockies between denver and salt lake. Then i learned to do that with any reliability i would basically need a jet. 90% answer is a pilatus or king air. 60% is probably an sr22t. All...

Piper Arrow flood on the market

Can't get 25", more like 22" to 23" full throttle. I pull the rpms back at 1000' agl to 2350ish.

Piper Arrow flood on the market

I'm trying to figure out why anyone would fly an arrow in Colorado. The one I rent has a new engine (~350 hrs) and it sucks for climbing. The Archer climbs better. We filed IFR one night this fall and I couldn't even get to 11k' and it took about 20 mins to get to 10k' when my instructor...

Buying a Plane to train in and keep

My opinion, I can't find a reason to buy. I recently looked at a centurion share, then I found the rental cirri. I've got a Cherokee 6 I can rent to head east. And I've got 6 or 7 cirri I can rent to get over the mountains. If you've got 600k to drop on an airplane, I would wait to make sure...
