Sen Thune fighting the 1,500hr rule

Not trying to be a jerk, but that is almost certainly BS. Ask to see the policy, and if it says that, scan it, and I'll wire you $100. More importantly, that makes me have a VERY low opinion of that school. Not training in IMC is like not training in an airplane for your PPL. Sure, you can learn...

Cirrus steps up to the plate

My mind is blown. A company offers free training---even if you're buying a used product on which they make no money---and they get roasted by pilots. What a joke this place can be sometimes. Transition training is one of the best things you can do as a pilot. I agree with the OP: Cirrus is...

Sen Thune fighting the 1,500hr rule

"It’s really only a few of the real bottom-feeders that are the least well run, the least capitalized companies that are having the most trouble. A couple come to mind: Great Lakes and Mesa. There are still a few of them that have extraordinarily low starting pay, in the $20,000 range, barely...

Sen Thune fighting the 1,500hr rule

Whole post is good, but I think JonnyJet really nailed it with this paragraph. Regionals are betting on pilots' being quite short-sighted and forgetting about history until they can get the 1500 rule repealed and go back to the Good Old Days of $18,000/yr salaries and crash pads. Historically...

    Phone in Flight

Seems like you typically get a useable signal to about 5k. Never had anything functional above 10k, but I typically go to airplane mode before then---otherwise battery drain just gets insane as it frantically tries to latch onto a tower.

    Phone in Flight

Same. ForeFlight on the phone is pretty crippled but good enough in a pinch for viewing charts and plates if the iPad calls it quits. Never used it for real but have flown practice approaches with it in VMC. It works well enough---just small. That got me comfortable cancelling all of my paper...

How many "flyable days" in the PNW?

hahahah oh man the Evergreen stuff has been entertaining me for a week. As long as you can laugh at that sort of thing, you'll be totally fine up here. I'm being a bit facetious, of course. As long as you're outside of Seattle proper, people are generally normal. :)

How many "flyable days" in the PNW?

I'll try to help out, since I've lived here for about five years and have my aircraft based at PAE. Weather. First, it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. In the summer (June through September) I'd say that 90+% of the days are great VFR. Our summers out here are amazing, and daylight...

    iPad Foreflight Reboot Lockout

Both. You absolutely can operate a GPS receiver on a commercial flight (or a private flight for that matter); the GPS chips can work in airplane mode, since there is no requirement for the receiver to transmit anything. Half the 135 operations and probably some 121s in the country are in...

    Really nice logbook?

This might be what you're looking for: http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/aircraft-supplies/cockpit-tools/aircraft-logbooks-and-accessories/senior-pilot-s-flight-log-and-record.html I've got the smaller ("non-senior") version of this one, which has served me well for the past decade or so...

    Mixture rich on approach?

I think it's pretty much personal preference, to be honest. I almost always just leave the mixture where I had it in the descent, props at their cruise/descent setting, and sync on, but a guy I fly with often (and respect) always likes to push up the props, turn off sync, and go full rich on...

    Foreflight: Pack for your trip

Yeah that's what I do. Brief at home and then do a final "pack" right before starting up. It works pretty well and is reasonably respectful of data usage.

    Renter's Insurance / Insight / Opinion / Rants / Recomendations?

100% correct and also, IMHO, 100% BS that flight schools do this. I get it for renters/advanced students who presumably know the ropes and whose experience and skill the school may not know. But it my mind, it's just abhorrent that flight schools allow their insurance companies to subrogate...

    Roger, Wilco Over and Out...

Typically, the complete absence of a cadence and/or a flow is the giveaway. :)

    Roger, Wilco Over and Out...

No harm done---just sounded kind of ridiculous.

    Roger, Wilco Over and Out...

Heard today up at PAE: "no joy" then "tally ho" and finally "target acquired." This all from a C172 or 182 referencing other 172s doing T&Gs. It's like, dude, WWII ended 75 years ago, and your aircraft has neither guns nor missles.

    Roger, Wilco Over and Out...

Technically, though, that isn't correct. "Affirmative, we're going to the FBO" would be the right way to answer. That said, it's pretty clear what you're saying either way. Roger = "I heard you" Affirmative = "Yes" Negative = "No" Wilco = "I'll comply with your instruction" Obviously, the...

    Roger, Wilco Over and Out...

I always thought roger was pointless but that wilco serves a purpose. "N12345 advise tower you're IFR" / "Wilco, N12345". It's pretty pointless to read that kind of instruction back, but it's worth letting ATC know that I'll do what they want me to. I don't get why a pilot would reply with...

Next... American Airlines accused of "racism"

Sadly, most universities really do teach this stuff. Many actually require it. What Chris was saying is right there in the mandatory training sessions at University of Delaware: "“[a] racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system...

    Foreflight: Pack for your trip

This would be a great feature. They're pretty receptive to user feedback; I'd drop them a mail. Wouldn't be surprised if they're already working on something like this.
