    Control Tower Closure Info

That line would be funny if it wasn't so true... :mad2:

    Headset options

Any particular price range you're looking at? You can easily spend $100 to $1000. One thing you might consider is go with a cheaper one until you're pretty sure you want to keep doing this stuff for a while, then as a solo or check ride gift to yourself, buy a more expensive set with ANR...

Sequester stupidity closing the KSTS control tower

Wow. Not even one case you can think of where a class D tower is appropriate?

    Towers & Colorado

I was wondering the same thing. This is what he's getting at: http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_22306481/lovelands-airport-considered-virtual-tower I could agree with small airports having ATC services like that. Much more cost effective.

    Towers & Colorado

I don't see the need for a tower at KFTG. The security issues he raised are bravo sierra. There are well under 200 operations a day there IIRC, mostly single engine piston aircraft. I've been there quite a few times and it is never that busy. KFNL and KGXY are busier and for some reason...

    Short XC flights from KAPA

The KHUT trip was a great idea, just did that flight the other day. I could have spent hours at the Cosmosphere -- lots of cool stuff to see. As it was, I only had time for an overnight. I've also done XC flights to KRAP, KDLH, KABQ and KPUB since my check ride just 3 months ago. Pretty well...

    Flying east from KBJC

Okay, cool. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on a secret handshake or something. Thanks! I just got checked out on Rocky Mountain's 172n's. Still will be flying out of APA upon occasion as well.

    Flying east from KBJC

I did a checkout at BJC a few days ago and flew out to KHUT today. So, question for the BJC folks here -- is there a good way to get set up for a Bravo transition to go direct or is it just going to depend on time of day, etc? I got the "remain VFR clear of class bravo" this time, no biggie...

Long cross country as low hour pilot (500 miles each way)

Yup. My first flight as a private pilot was 700 miles. Probably the most useful / important thing I did was to chat with ScottD beforehand to make sure I didn't fly into bad wx. Other than that, allow for a good amount of time and go for it.

    Level of progression decreasing

Hang in there, it happens. At the stage of the game you're at, I wouldn't be worried at all. If that keeps up, one thing that is never a bad idea is a lesson or two with a different CFI. Not saying anything bad about your CFI, but sometimes heading the same thing explained differently can be...

    Cancelled my Chech-Ride Today

This. Checkrides can be stressful enough as it is without dealing with winds on top of it all.

    KBJC off field landing N93AA

http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kbjc/KBJC-Gnd-Twr-Mar-01-2013-2230Z.mp3 Declares emergency 13 minutes into the clip. http://kdvr.com/2013/03/01/3-escape-plane-crash-near-rocky-mountain-airport/ Anyone based at Metro know what happened?

Just my luck (1st XC as Private Pilot, low oil pressure)

...and we have the rest of the story. I flew this plane on multiple occasions since this occasion, always keeping an eye on the oil consumption. On more than one occasion, I had to add a couple quarts prior to flying. I let the club know that was the case and that it might be a good idea to...

my first solo Class C experience

I've definitely found it very helpful to utilize "say again" when necessary. Keep the airport diagram available and make sure you are going, where you want to be going. If you aren't sure where you are supposed to go, just stop where you are and ask for clarification. They'd much rather help...

Statistics showing towered airports are "safer"?

This gives some actual numbers: 78% of mid-airs in the traffic pattern occur at non-towered airports. http://www.aopa.org/asf/epilot_acc/e_chi97fa218a.html

Statistics showing towered airports are "safer"?

This gives some statistics, including the claim that most mid-airs occur at non-towered fields. I also remember hearing a statistical claim before but I'm having trouble locating an formal source for that. http://flighttraining.aopa.org/pdfs/SA15_Collision_Avoidance.pdf

    Cloud Heights for Checkride

Both places I rent from have student limitations of 10 knots total wind and 5 kts cross wind, which can be increased by CFI endorsement immediately prior to the flight. I think they then go up to 15 total winds and 8 cross wind component maximum. Anyway, point being it isn't at all unheard...

    XC KAPA to KABQ

It's on the to-do list. When I started working on the instrument rating, I realized that I need to focus on one thing at a time. After that is done, then comes the mountain checkout, complex, high performance, maybe a glider add-on... Aviation. Not just a hobby and a means of...
