    planes with no GPS questions

Isn't that the thing that they said would replace the A-N range? Never wanted one, either the A-N range or that new thing. And what is this VORTAX they're talking about. Don't we pay enough already? Scott (Another Champ driver)

    Wing loading

I agree with Henning that using rudder to pick up a wing is the way to smooth the ride. Trying to catch every little roll displacement can get tiring and I have noticed substantial improvement by simply holding a bit of light pressure on both rudder pedals, thus preventing the ruddervators from...

    Oil dipstick broke ......darn. Suggestions?

Count your blessings. It could have broken while in the engine, dropping the broken part into the engine case. You might could get lucky and get it out without further disassembly, but it could have been a lot worse. Scott

    Ignore thread option working?

The subject thread appears in the recent posts listing on the home page but does not appear within its forum. The thread content is available if I access it from the recent post list. I was under the impression this morning that the thread was still appearing in the forum, but I was probably...

    Ignore thread option working?

I selected the "Ignore Thread" option on a particular thread. While it appears in my User CP list of ignored threads, that thread continues to appear in the forum and on the home page list of recent activity. Do I need to so something else to use this feature? Scott

Coolest traffic you've seen in person

At Lincoln, NE circa 1969 on a fine Sunday afternoon: Lnk Twr: "Cessna 28J (me) cleared touch and go 17 Left, traffic is a Boeing seven-four-seven touch and go on the right." I, and no one else had ever seen a 747 yet. I was on final and looked back and to the right and saw the traffic. I...

talk me out of a luscombe 8a

But the 8E (85hp) and the 8F(90hp) are not eligible for the Light Sport rules. Anyone can handle the Luscombe 8A thru 8D, but it requires a manly, medically certified pilot to handle the 1,400 pounds of the 8E and 8F. If I were looking for a light sport eligible Luscombe today, I would look...

    Great trip to New England

Greg, I'm having some trouble figuring out where you drove from Elmira. Saratoga Lake looks like a far distance to the East. Anyway, I hope you are able to visit your mother frequently and I recommend driving up to the Village of Hammondsport from Elmira to visit the Glenn Curtiss Museum...

    Stemme S10-V Question

MIke, Don't worry about the paper work, just buy it. I think you'll need a glider rating plus a powered glider endorsement (but no medical certificate). You can get those in a couple days if you don't already have them. Everyone will envy you and we will enjoy your posts here telling us of...

How to Build a Fuel Truck

Just a tad off topic, but back in my days as a young lineboy, when we had both 80/87 and 100/130 octane, I thought the 180 horsepower Lycoming O360 used the green 100/130. The Lycoming O540 at 235 horsepower used red 80/87. Jay, are you sure your O360 will be happy on the 87 octane? Scott

Congress: create a private corporation to govern the air traffic control system

No need to look at other countries. We can look here in the United States at the post office, Fannie and Freddie as examples. My approach to analyzing these kinds of proposals is to imagine whether the proposed structure offers more or less opportunity for lobbying. Nothing raises campaign...

KADS : "PAN PAN, I've crashed and we can't get out"

And it would be silly since the Bonanza has two emergency exit windows designed to open with the quick pull of a pin. Scott

Jeppesen sends a tax bill for last year purchase

I'm willing to bet two dollars that Jeppesen, a subsidiary of Boeing, has sufficient legal talent, either in house, or in the parent company, or outside counsel to figure out sales tax collection and doing business in multiple states and countries. The recipient of the invoice has the option to...

    Denver airports

No sarcasm intended, just a light-hearted comment on flying in Colorado. I can usually see Pikes Peak while still 10 miles north of Fort Morgan on my way back to Meadow Lake airport (KFLY) and in my Luscombe, that's an hour to go. Scott

    Denver airports

I don't think anyone warned you about the visibility up here. Be prepared to watch your landmarks sit on your windshield for an excessively long time. Visibility greater than 100 miles is pretty common and some folks used to the South's 7 miles can get discouraged waiting an hour to get to that...

    Sleeping passengers ?

I used to wonder if the Bonanza's landing gear up-locks were somehow wired directly into my wife's sleep center. She would argue that she stayed awake until we leveled for cruise. Eventually she learned to follow along on the chart and slept less frequently. Either way, I was glad when she came...
