How long until the pre-GARA fleet of aircraft are gone?

I'll bite. You'll see Beach 18s, Cessna 210 and 170, Cessna 182RG and 172RG, older non-johnson bar Mooney, early Arrow, V tail Bonanza, and thr Musketeers lineage all eventually phase out. Some of it due to lack of power-packs, some insurance liability (hello 210,) and some to the spar issue...

Talk me out of a Cherokee 160

If it's you 90% of the time, go small. You're being smart. I went big, cause it's 4-5 people 50-60% of the time. When the kids grow up and move out, I'm finding a 2 seater experimental.

Paint estimates for 2008 Cessna 182T?

@Sachin I made inquiries about my own plane. Started with the list from https://schemedesigners.com/paint-shop-referral-list/ Seems like up here it's about 18k+ for a quality job. I can wait but 50J can't. The guys that did the Silver Eagle conversion recommended 2 shops, one everyone knows and...

How much does your mechanic or avionics person charge?

Avionics? $145/hr in North NJ. He ain't killing it, the costs are just that high for everything here.

    Where is everyone?

I was flying yesterday over Long Island sound on my way to/from Montauk. For a holiday weekend, both the airport and the skies were unusually empty. It was so quiet on the radios even my wife made a remark.

Taking you plane back to the factory for a pre buy - thoughts?

I know it has been a sellers market but if you're not willing to transport your plane or allow it to be ferried to the mechanic of the buyer’s choice, why would you consider selling it? Even at your home field, some other mechanic is going to tear into your bird. It's far easier and less risk...

    Best Upgrade Order???

@Sinistar overhauls are currently back logged about 12-20 weeks, depending on shop. Some aren't even taking an order. IF you have a 2 blade prop and can find an older IO-470, they're doing the Norland conversion in under 10weeks. It's about as cheap as a PPonk but you'd have to sell your own...

    Aircraft purchase questions

Honestly, if you don't need the 1000lbs useful I would buy a straight tail or fast back (A-D.) My favorite is a "D" model. Damn things are pretty. I needed a 5th seat, so...

    Aircraft purchase questions

I fly a 205. My horizontal stabilizer is smaller than a 182P. I do have a Horton but no VGs. You learn to quickly put trim full on final. That and landing with some power. Sounds like you have newer, "fancy" seats. I would spend money on VGs if you're really worried. Other than that, avionics...

    Aircraft purchase questions

There are significant differences between a P/Q and an F model: 1. Flaps won't have presets. You have to hold it down yourself while they move. One hand will be occupied. 2. F came with a generator, not an alternator. 3. Landing gear is tougher but more narrow. 4. The horizontal stabilizer is...

    Air-to-Air 1959 Cessna 182B - Mine!

So jealous. I want a 182D or C in the worst way. I had to get a 205 for the extra seats and useful load. Hoping one day to be a fastback owner. You have better paint job than mine and better avionics than I got in my bird. Nicely done.

Help me spend up to 165k

It's not the 2 extra seats, it's the 210. Too many gear up issues in the fleet. Yes, more seats will add cost but the model itself is cursed as far as insurance is concerned.

Help me spend up to 165k

    @Tom Wells Ill give you my quotes: $1600/yr for a VREF $170k 182 $8400/yr for a VREF $170k 210 $4400/yr for a VREF $170 205 $3400/yr for a VREF $140 TB-20 Oddly, a 206 would have been cheaper to insure by $500-600 than the 205. Keep in mind I have the 100hrs in type on a 182, don't on the...

    Have aircraft sales/transactions slowed?

Off topic but this. We signed people up to debt at 17 years old that they can't escape via bankruptcy when it's clear they are, for better or worse, lifetime bankrupt. Worse, it's the Dept of Education doing it, a branch of our own government. Someone said it better than me: "If you beat cancer...

Carb heat, fouled plugs, and Lyco powered Cessnas

The big issue with pattern work and carb heat on is that you're putting unfiltered air into the engine. That close to ground and you're picking up dust/dirt. That stuff ain't good for engine longevity. That said, I commend you for playing safe and making the right go/no-go call.
