    Rent or Own before IFR?

I owned my pa32 prior to the instrument. Insurance went down maybe 10-20%, so honestly a pretty negligible difference. To me the bigger factor is learning in the plane you plan to fly actual IFR in. If the plane that you want is available to buy I wouldn’t hesitate to buy.

    Electric fuel pump questions

I have a Saratoga with IO-540. A few weeks ago I started experiencing issues with idling. With the throttle all the way out the idle would fluctuate from 550-700ish. This fluctuation seemed greater than before but until I started having issues I have to admit I didn't watch it that closely...

PA-34 Crash in Orange Beach Alabama

On my way back from Pensacola yesterday the ATC guy was yacking back and forth with a plane about this accident. It was obvious these two guys knew each other and they both knew the pilot of the PA34. However, I was astonished at the radio time these two were using up discussing the accident...

How to get a Garmin G5 HSI

I installed the first G5 as AI. Planned on keeping the NSD-360 until it died. Well it started acting up and occasionally the compass card would stop spinning. Rather than spend money on it for repair I opted to do the 2nd G5. In hindsight so happy the NSD-360 HSI started to fail. The G5 HSI is...

    Online weather briefing

Could you elaborate a little on this. I have foreflight pro plus. That’s where I get my briefings. How would I tie it to a FS account? Sorry if that’s a dumb question.

    Too Much YouTube

I agree completely. I was simply giving my anecdotal experience that the guys that seam to do it most at my non towered field are the experienced pilots that should know it's not appropriate.

    Too Much YouTube

OK, so very little specific phrases annoy me but simply overusing the Unicom burns me up. "Hey Charles, what you been up to? Awe, I've been busy at the farm. Haven't been up flying much lately..." But yeah, "Any traffic please advise" is one phrase I could do without. Interestingly at my...

OK so to prevent me from pulling out the AIM what is the proper reply etiquette for "Bugsmasher123 radar contact 10 miles S of Podunk municipal." ?

    Too Much YouTube

Meh. If tossing out that phrase to ATC is my worst foul for the flight then I consider it a good day. I’ve said “position checks” before. I mean heck if it’s good enough for SteveO it’s good enough for me.

    Nashville...

And a little info on getting around in Nashville. In our limited time there it looked like uber was by far the best option. Even better than a crew car (if it were available) due to parking fees. When uber is $15 and parking is $10-$20 anywhere near the downtown area I would opt for the uber!

    I don’t remember exactly. Mid 2017 a couple times I think.

    Nashville...

Flew into john tune a couple times. Really nice. Loved Nashville. The music / bar strip is really neat and loaded with incredible food and entertainment. My only disappointment was the smoking. Several years back Arkansas made it illegal to smoke inside any place that served food. My wife...

    BAS Harnesses

My Saratoga has manual shoulder belts and I hate having to loosen it to change fuel tanks or sometimes to put in flaps. I've toyed with the idea of getting inertia reals for the two front seats but haven't done it. I agree with your assessment, but haven't spent the $ to make the change just yet.

Avidyne IFD440 and 540... who has one?

No. Not reallY. Although there is some overlap in function they’re really two different tools. The IFD 100 is simply a second screen for your gps. Agree 100%. But my point wasn’t real clear. What I was saying is that I prefer the IFD over the GTN regardless of the cost (install or equipment)...

[NA] Best cut for a steak?

If cooked correctly I find that any of the good cuts (porterhouse, NY strip, ribeye) will do just fine. Anything beyond medium rare is a foul. I recently got a green egg (Father’s Day gift from wife) and did some NY strips. Possibly the best steak I’ve ever eaten. Something about sustained and...

Avidyne IFD440 and 540... who has one?

Traded a GNS 530w for and IFD 550. Like going from an Atari to an x-box (or whatever the latest greatest gaming console is). It is so damn intuitive and the ability to use 100% touchscreen OR use buttons and knobs is awesome. I use touch screen most of the time but if it’s a little bumpy I do...

    Another Foreflight question

WTH is magnetic track??? I mean track is the path you’re on. Heading is the direction you’re pointing. Heading can be magnetic or true. The only way to get any number that should be labeled as “heading” is with a compass or magnetic input (magnetometer for most modern instruments) Since the...

    Devastating news

I second the notion that you never know how much time you have left. Welcome every day with thanks for the blessing of living another day. About 2 weeks ago my wife and I were talking about some good friends of ours and just how cool they were. They are about 15 years older than us but just...

    Larger Aspen on the horizon?

I’ve compared the feature lists of the G5 to things like the Aspen and the Sandel. What some would call a feature others may call clutter. It’s all in what you need. I think it’s equally important to consider the rest of the panel (esp the radio stack) when assessing the desires for the HSI...
