    Cherokee 140/160 prop pitch

The mod has an STC. After repitching, it is still within spec. on static RPM.

    Finding other traffic

I think that people frequently look too high or too low. Assume traffic 500 ft above or below at a mile (6000 ft) and calculate the angle (about 5 degrees unless my quick math is wrong). Also, glance at the ground at about the distance called to get your eyes focused at that distance.

    Cherokee 140/160 prop pitch

Nothing bad is going to happen if you do nothing. Your prop is pitched more toward take off and climb instead of cruise and you will need to pay more attention in power on descents not to exceed red line RPM. Your engine/prop combination will probably also be able to exceed red line wide open...

    Cherokee 140/160 prop pitch

Do the Art Mattsen prop tip mod and repitch 4 inches, 2 for the HP increase that you already have and an additional 2 for the increase in prop efficiency. That is what I did and WOT straight and level remained red line. I don't know who has the prop tip STC now. Art is no longer with us. The...

    Off Airport Landing Austin Exec

Since you could say that the plane "plowed up" the cornfield, the location name is a little bit ironic. Pflug is plow in German. (It is also a German surname).

    Fixed-pitch vs. Constant-speed

As an automotive analogy, I always think of it as having a continuously variable automatic transmission set to maintain a selected (optimum for the phase of operation) engine RPM vs. having a direct drive without transmission but being able to select the gear ratio (pitch) of the rear end for a...

    Airspeed indicator reads low.

Of course "everything checks 100%" includes a leak test on the line between the pitot tube and the instrument? Could it be telling you the truth? If the opening of the new heated pitot tube is oriented correctly, it has to be seeing the correct dynamic pressure. Cabin pressure is not the same...

    Landing at Closed Airport

I don't remember if we have ASOS or AWOS (it is owned by the gov't) but if it has any temporary message function, we don't know it.

    Landing at Closed Airport

Did you have a radio? Did the FBO have a radio? Some one who lands on a closed runway after seeing and recognizing the X's with no further information shouldn't be flying. Some one on the ground could get hurt or killed. Some in the plane could get hurt or killed. Consequences are deserved...

    When was your first scare?

First real cross wind landing in western Kansas at probably less than 100 hrs. after training where there are no real cross winds. Got it down on center line aligned with the runway but the plane was just drifting sideways about to leave the edge of the runway. Put it back in the air and...

    PA28-140/160 v-speeds

I don't think that an engine HP increase changes Vx or Vy at all. If you increase HP, you increase the excess HP (beyond that needed to hold the aircraft in the air at zero climb rate at min drag speed) which totally goes into increased climb rate. Vy corresponds to a tangent point on the drag...

Funny things you have heard on the radio

Not aviation radio, just local radio stations. Things that I have misunderstood due to local dialects: Community announcements Schedule for the September mate-ing (Meeting) of the St. Andrews women's club - NW So Carolina. Announcement looking for volunteers for the males on...

    Coffee cup thread

Has to have three characteristics: - Thin wall (no mug) so that it doesn't cool the coffee down too much when poured. No pre-heating needed - A handle that accommodates arthritic fingers - Thin wall so my wife can see the remaining level and know when it needs refilling ;)

What to do about my flying club.

I would expect a low time certified VFR pilot to be able to make a 700 mile cross country without a problem he couldn't handle. It is a wonderful learning and confidence building opportunity. The fact that he couldn't wasn't the fault of the plane. It seems to indicate a problem with the...
