Aircraft partnership sought (KGTU, KAUS, KHYI)

I'd be interested in a 6 seater partnership out of KGTU if anyone ends up with any leads. I ran into a very cool guy driving a very nice Cherokee Six at the pumps at KGTU several months ago and he was based out of Lago. Based on our conversation he seemed open to a partnership...but it was...

    Quick iPad question.

Personally, I'd spend the $$ and get the cellular even if you don't plan to use it so you at least have some backup GPS capabilities if your Stratus is down. I did the same and found that it was worth adding it for $10/month to my phone plan so that I could connect it to 4G and check weather...

    I have a confession...

I fly out of an airport with intersecting runways. Many times during my PPL training my CFI would ask the tower for the crosswind runway when the pattern was slow. I live in central Texas and during many parts of the year 10G18 and up is pretty normal...so if you can't fly on an otherwise nice...

    Hide your Stratus ?

we have a hangar...we leave ours sitting out on the desk plugged into the charger for the next person to use. I think all 4 of us have a different place we put it so we just leave it like that. It's another 15 seconds of stuff to do before the engine is running so it's not a big deal.

Do you think night flying should require a sing-off?

I agree with this. I did some more night flying with my CFI post-PPL and the first time I needed to get night current again I took him to dinner and we flew back after dusk and did the required landings. It's still not my favorite thing in the world...as much as I love flying at night. I...

Crazy to purchase plane to finish PPL?

...exactly why I bought into one early on in my PPL. 1) I wanted to train in what I was going to fly for the next X years. 2) We do owner assisted maintenance/annuals. I like that. 3) No scheduling conflicts. I'm in a plane with several people and in almost 3 years never had one issue...

    Solo question

I had my own plane during my PPL and my 'deal' with my CFI was that I'd just call or text him when I wanted to go up. He was a pretty laid back guy - we didn't really talk too much about what I was going to do as I was limited to either flying in the pattern or heading to the east of my airport...

    Zero time engine cost

I agree. Our LLC had our O-540 rebuilt 4 years ago for $15 by a very reputable company. We looked a few weeks ago and I think it was around $18k now. $35k for a 320 sounds insane...unless they are putting in a titanium crankshaft or something. :D

    Eair Pain / Pressure Relief

some gum never hurts. I kinda taught my kid the hold your nose and blow one time when it bothered him pretty bad. Thankfully, it worked. That's the method I use. I logged quite a few carrier TO/Landings back in the day in the back of a C2 so was no stranger to figuring out ways to equalize...

    Best Aviation Apps for Android?

I know right? All the more reason to hate on the platform. :D I'm sure this guy will be showing everyone METAR's on his iWatch or whatever the hell it's going to be called. Lame.

    Wx forecast tools

www.windyty.com as well is pretty cool. Just enter your city/area and it'll give you a nice chart showing predictive ceilings, etc... for a few days out. I've found it to be fairly accurate.

    Best Aviation Apps for Android?

I hate iOS. I have an iPad w/ ForeFlight and a few things so I have the platform and have plenty running there. As a phone though, it would drive me batty using the latest iOS release. I bought a Samsung S6 and couldn't be happier. Killer phone. Really all I need on the phone are...

    Giving passengers the whole package

Most of my passengers have been pretty interested in what I'm doing. I don't spew random info during the process and I don't typically let them do anything when it comes to the pre-flight. We are there to fly and I want to get us in the air as safely as I can with as few interruptions as...

Mock Oral Checkride Help by Phone?

Maybe I've just taken a bunch of tests in my life so I'm jaded, but you know where you need help, if any...and if you don't then your CFI has failed you. I had a great CFI and appreciated flying with him because of his experience. He was a 30k hour ATP and A&P who flew anything with or...

Preparing to begin my Private Pilot License training

An alternate idea here... I studied all during my training (I had flown ~25 hours almost 15 years prior the first time I started my PPL so I had the ground school knowledge locked away in my brain somewhere...) and waited until a few weeks before my checkride to take the written. The...

When to switch to tower frequency

#1 for sure. There might still be traffic that ground is expediting in front you, etc... You won't hear/know that if you are sitting on the tower freq while you are doing the run up. Like most everyone else here, I switch to tower when I'm pulling out of the run up area and requesting...
