Traveling for the check ride / DPE

Yes, this is what I thought might be the case. At any rate it will be a month or two till I'm ready.

Traveling for the check ride / DPE

Just had a couple good cross country flights over the past week, and my instructor and I worked trough the remaining requirements. He feels I'm getting close to check ride, and after checking off the night flight requirements, wants me to do some more XC's to airports near Rome NY. His...

There are some rich folks out there...

If they call back, they might offer you the digital rights to say one image for $200 or something. If it's really nice, take it and then go to one of the many online canvas photo places and buy what you want. I got a package from, I think "canvas factory" of one big, two medium and several...

Will paper charts dissaper as EFB's take over?

I actually purchased iFlyGPS for my android tablet, and have become pretty proficient in using it. I also tried the 30 day free trial of Garmin. I've seen foreflight and whatever my instructor has (something else) as well. They all seem to have their plusses and minuses. And skyvector - yes, I...

Will paper charts dissaper as EFB's take over?

Interesting discussions about EFB vs. Paper charts etc. My instructor is of the opinion that I should "know how to do it all manually without hesitation, but also know how to use the modern technology since that is what you will use going forward". So, in my case I planned my last two XCs using...

Why not a Sundowner? Another plane thread...

Found a AA-5 Cheetah with hail damage for $14K. 7677 AFTT, 1029 SMOH. In annual as of 3/2017. Not sure if the hail damage was after that annual. Pics: http://www.barnstormers.com/listing_images.php?id=1239346 Thoughts? I might email the seller and see what the deal is with the damage (if after...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Sunday was beautiful here - saw it coming and scheduled with my instructor ahead of time for a solo XC Sunday AM. Planned it out Saturday evening, and flew KSYR->KBGM->KSYR Sunday morning. Great fight, no problems other than once again not being able to contact FSS over the radio. Departure told...

Acceptable margin for error in navigation, tests

Bob - this is interesting to me, coming up on PPL check ride. My instructor made me do the nav logs by hand for the first 2 XC's, after that he said I could use a computer prepared one. (I use AOPA's website). For the checkride, I presume the examiner will specify, but if not I can use a...

Why not a Sundowner? Another plane thread...

I've done quite a bit of "internet shopping" over the past few weeks. I still like the Sundowner in general, but I'm also considering the Grumman Cheetah/Tiger. Seems like there are a fair number of them available at the $45K and less price range in (apparent) decent shape. I'd really like to...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

@Ben - Yeah, I can sure relate. One decent day followed by a week of crud. Rinse, repeat... Wish I was done with PPL and working on my IR, I'd have tons of real IMC to practice in :-/ Sunday looks to be nice here - planning on another XC Sunday AM to KSYR->KBGM and back. Once that is checked...

    Best flight ever today

I have to ask my CFI to do this with me. I have only done the required hood work, but I think this would be head and shoulders above for training. We certainly have had enough clouds this winter to do it! I'm close to check ride, but this would be a great way to make a non-solo day a useful day.

was she signed off for solo XC too soon?

So- since the answer is obvious, I thought perhaps a perspective might prove more useful for discussion. As a student not too far from this level of training (signed off on XCs but no checkride yet), I gotta say - yeah - clearly she was in need of more training. BUT with that said, on the first...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

@Ronbonjovi - Wait till you practice emergency descent from like 3000AGL - THAT was fun. Feel like a real dive bomber. I'm still having "fun" with forward slip to landing sometimes, practice makes perfect. Sounds like you are doing plenty of that. My landings in general all improved dramatically...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

A very HUMBLING lesson today. Winds were 10G17 @330, available runways at FZY are 6/24 & 15/33. I went in with the plan to practice xwind landings as much as possible, so after a couple warmup patterns on 33, we shifted to 6. Man, direct 90degree xwind 10G17 in a Cheokee 160, for a student...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Back in the saddle again - Finally! Weather has been brutal here in CNY this winter, I've flown only 3 times since December! Today's weather was perfect, so I decided "screw it" and took a half day off from work. Did an hour of dual to get my wheels turning again, then dropped off the instructor...
