Is there any profit in refurbishing aircraft?

This would be an incredibly great thing is there was some way the FAA would allow some sort of "conversion" to E/AB (or some new E category) status for these older certified airframes. Even if they were required to go through this exact gut, clean, inspect, process from a "Certified" refurbisher...

Taildragger to Biplane - thoughts about transition from nosewheel

Hehe.. I re-did my 1984 fiberglass boat a few years back. Tried that whole Awl Grip by hand thing - did not work out at all for me, I made a huge mess. Wound up doing all the prep, then having a local auto body shop paint it with PPG 2-part (single stage). Has held up real well. Now the single...

Taildragger to Biplane - thoughts about transition from nosewheel

I will definitely keep that in mind! I'd love to help ferry it back, would be a blast. Might be as soon as this late summer/fall, or next spring.

    My Unusual Attitude/Aerobatic Training Experience...

Wow, this looks super interesting to me for so many reasons. All of your reasons (learning more about the 'edge of the envelope') as well as improving skills and especially biplane time! Where did you do this? Anyone know of anyplace near Central NY I could do this - or a "fly in and spend a few...

Taildragger to Biplane - thoughts about transition from nosewheel

I'm going based my own memory from 30 years ago (so could be wrong about the system he used, and even the paint) - but I'm pretty sure that the full logs still exist for the build so I can hopefully get an answer. As to the paint - it's not bad. Its just showing it's age, certainly it's not...

    time to solo

I just want to chime in here and agree with everything said. It took me longer than normal too, and I'm also with a career instructor who has a million hours. 1) cushion. Get one. maybe two. I used two 1" firm pillow cushions from about my 2nd lesson on to near solo. Then reduced to 1, which I...

Taildragger to Biplane - thoughts about transition from nosewheel

When I was out in Michigan and flew in it with the current owner, he mentioned that he much prefers wheel landings to full stall in this plane. I also recall that on final he just slowly pulled power pretty much the whole way down the slope, ending with idle just about touchdown. At the time I...

Taildragger to Biplane - thoughts about transition from nosewheel

I'm nearing check ride for my PPL - all training so far in a Cherokee 140/160 (and a few hours in a C172). I have found a couple schools around here that offer some tailwheel training. One in a C140, one in a J3 Cub, and one with a Citabria. I haven't looked outside of roughly an hour drive...

Studying for the check ride (PPL) - Suggested resources/techniques?

Really? I mean, that fact that you are allowed to find information that is not "instant recall required" has been stated literally everyplace I've read about the check ride. "Open book" etc. are terms that are used repeatedly by nearly everyone and every video/training aid/book I've read. I'm...

Studying for the check ride (PPL) - Suggested resources/techniques?

Thanks everyone for the advice so far - those are a couple of great checklists. Just the sort of thing I was looking for. I will order that book as well, I was going to order the android app but it apparently doesn't work correctly on some devices so paper is good... I will be doing at least...

Studying for the check ride (PPL) - Suggested resources/techniques?

It's time to really hit the books. Long XC checked off and now just night flight, and lots of maneuvers practice. Hoping to go for the ride end of May/June. I have all my written test study material (Rod Machado's book, Dauntless prep software, FAA pubs) and have been sort of re-doing that to...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Completed the long XC solo today. Weather was clear and a million, 65F at ground level, and light changing winds. However, I realized soon after takeoff from KSYR headed south that I'm too used to flying on cloudy days or early mornings. I departed 1:45pm, and the thermals were crazy. My...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Heading out today at 1pm for the "big solo XC". Will be KSYR->KBGM->7N1->KSYR. Weather is perfect, wish me luck! (I didn't have time to prepare costumes but I wish I had... oh well.)

Traveling for the check ride / DPE

Yeah, no idea. I'll have to ask about it. I really don't mind the XC to check ride, I just hadn't thought about it before he mentioned it. He wants me to do 3 minimum XCs out to various airports near Rome (he specified them). Probably to get me familiar with that whole area (the diversion and so...

Is there any profit in refurbishing aircraft?

This thread is interesting. I suspect that this market is a lot like the classic/collectable car market. Really similar in a lot of ways, with a much tighter supply of both source material (planes/cars) and suppliers. There are plenty of people making money in the classic car/collectable/custom...

    Flying costs thru the years

When I started training the first time, 1997, I was renting a C172 for $45/hr wet and the instructor was $10/hr. No, I'm not joking. God I wish I'd stuck with it back then. I still remember what he said "I'm building time, you pay for the gas and plane and I get the hours" Why the hell is it so...

Traveling for the check ride / DPE

Hmm. Just going by what my instructor (Gopi) said. I'll have to ask him more about that.

Why not a Sundowner? Another plane thread...

I think on the AA-5 the wings are aluminum, but are "bonded" not riveted. So that does bring up a good possible issue. A couple of those hits look pretty major too, like softball sized hail... I don't think I would seriously consider this one, but it was interesting to me that it could be had...

Traveling for the check ride / DPE

NO, I definitely did not think that. I just meant it would be a crappy ride home thinking about busting the check ride.

Traveling for the check ride / DPE

I suppose the real cool thing about taking the ride at a distant field is that if I do pass, I'm a real PPL and can make my real first flight home after. More incentive to study/practice like crazy...
