First time in a tailwheel - Citabria lesson last night

Well, lesson #2 was canceled due to winds. 18G22 and not right down the runway. Instructor called me and said not a good day for learning at this point. So I'll try again later on. Main issue there is only one instructor who is allowed to instruct in the TW at this time (another one is hopefully...

First time in a tailwheel - Citabria lesson last night

Just scheduled for lesson #2 this afternoon. Winds predicted 1908G12, available runway is 15/33. Winds predicted to be increasing to 10G18 by the end of my lesson block. Not sure that we will go, seeing it's lesson #2, but OTOH I just spent an afternoon practicing Xwind in the C172 on a much...

Aerobatic flight schools in FL - opinions?

So, it sounds like I had picked a couple good choices anyhow. I will have to talk to my wife, plan some dates, and see who is available during those times. AZ or FL... Budd or Steve. Been watching Pitts training vids today, damn if that doesn't look like a total blast...

Aerobatic flight schools in FL - opinions?

That's exactly my reasoning for training in the Pitts. (although I hadn't considered training in a Great Lakes like suggested above, might have to consider that as well) I figure if I can master landing a Pitts, and general maneuvers, I should be able to handle the ASII. Thats one of the reasons...

First time in a tailwheel - Citabria lesson last night

Well, its a flying club so... Yeah they go in the lock box :-) If it was my plane, in my hangar, I'd probably not worry about it. But then again, no sense making it "Easy" for some numb-nuts kid who breaks into the hangar and thinks he's gonna go flying with no lesson.

Aerobatic flight schools in FL - opinions?

My inherited biplane (Acro Sport II) is going to be down for repairs/maint/etc. for probably a year. In the meantime, I've already started on the TW endorsement. I would like to go from there to one of the acro schools this winter. I'd probably try to combine this into a vacation for myself...

First time in a tailwheel - Citabria lesson last night

Being new to the plane, I carefully used the checklist for every single item. But I can see people getting in a hurry and forgetting... Just like I've forgotten to remove the keys from the 172 once (it was off, but keys still in ignition). A bit embarrassing to come back in to the flying club...

Stick and Rudder by Wolfgang Langewiesche

I bought it, read it, and liked it. I think the perfect time to read it for a primary student would be after about 10 hours of flight. The style is dated, and the writer was not a good writer even back then. I would not recommend it as the ONLY source. BUT many of the concepts are presented in a...

First time in a tailwheel - Citabria lesson last night

Thats pretty funny. I hadn't flown a Cessna anything since the early 90's, and did all my primary training in a 160HP Cherokee. When I first flew the 172's at our club, my first comment was "it handles like a minivan". Not that the Cherokee is any sports car, but maybe its a mid-size sedan. I...

First time in a tailwheel - Citabria lesson last night

Actually, I can log PIC and Dual Received as long as I'm sole manipulator (which I was for all but the last landing). I just can't act as PIC until I have the endorsement. §61.51 Pilot logbooks. (e) Logging pilot-in-command flight time. (1) A sport, recreational, private, commercial, or...

First time in a tailwheel - Citabria lesson last night

Took this ol girl up last night with an instructor. First time I've been PIC at the controls of a tailwheel plane. It was a lot of fun, definitely different than flying the 172 or Cherokee 140 but the flying part really wasn't hard to get the hang of. Adverse yaw was much more pronounced, and...

    Order of Training

I, too, vote for sticky status - in training and Medical Topics (or maybe linked from another sticky/FAQ in training?) 4 years ago, reading about Dr. Bruce on here saved my a**. After a year of wrangling I was issued thanks 100% to Dr. B. I was SUPER lucky since I happened to read about not...

Should I bother to submit my MED records?

I can totally respect your decision to not go any further. However, as someone who had a different but also screwy case, I'd advise that Dr. Chein's fee was quite literally the cheapest part of my medical. It really might be worth it for you to have a consult (via internet/email/fax) with him...

    C130 crash, Savanah, Video.

First off - Thoughts and prayers for the 9 crew onboard... Looks like no one had a chance. Not sure that this has been posted here, but when I came home last night and flipped on the TV news I saw this video (ff to ~20 seconds in)...

RC Airplanes At Our Airport - Thoughts

6B4 here in Central NY has an R/C Club based right at the airport. I only know this because when doing simulated check rides out that way we did some short field practice there, and they were flying that day. My instructor clued me in, and we just did a couple landings and left...

Flying to NYC area - airport with good public transit to Manhattan?

I just drove down to NYC for the weekend last weekend and had a ball. But its a 5 hour drive for me (Central NY west of Syracuse). I got to thinkin... If I were to take one of the club's 172's down that way (which, coincidentally is where my DPE had me plan my fake XC for the check-ride -...

    Public Intox/3rd Class Med

Just a bit more advice as someone who has had to do some of this - While you wait for your consult with Dr. Bruce or another senior AME, you can go ahead and start gathering the requirements: - Call the police and/or city/town/village court where your offense was. Ask how to track down the...

    oh gawd....a rant

I agree - oh to have such problems around here... (note: we do have a few active EAA chapters and fly-in breakfasts around here. But I'd love to have the "too much GA support/activity" problem :-) )

Preliminary results of the ERAU PA-28 accident

I just about crapped when I read this report, even though anyone following this story was pretty well expecting something along these lines. The fact that the OTHER spar was already fractured and starting to propagate is the real eye opener. There were reports (no source) that this particular...
