    HSI test question

the real world solution here is to turn the yellow knob... Is it stuck?

    IRA Checkride with single VOR/GS

You'll be fine as long as you can find an instructor who knows how to fly without a gps. Those are getting rarer and rarer.

    IO550 vs Cirrus installation

I’m sure you have read this already then! https://www.dropbox.com/s/yy7saag0a38mdp6/ABS%20article%20r2.docx?dl=0

    IO550 vs Cirrus installation

I know they are completely different animals... but in the turbo Bonanzas, if you run at the max continuous power (balls to the wall), they go through cylinders like oil. Reduce manifold and rpm after takeoff and the cylinders will go to tbo. On the other hand. Cylinders are relatively...

What does insurance company consider Make and Model?

Curious. On any insurance company policy with an open pilot warranty it usually says something along the lines of 25 hours in Make and Model. There is nothing in the fine print about what this means and seems to be open to interpretation. If it is a M20C to be flown does this mean the person...

    Expensive airplanes have right-of-way

Controller nearly ran me in a Bonanza into hills yesterday so save a tri-motor Falcon 15 seconds. Unless the cheaper plane crashes, the more expensive aircraft gets priority. I'm pretty sure that is written in the ATC rule book.

    RNAV RWY 21 at SMO

From a practical view on the Santa Monica approach I always get a "slam dunk" into santa monica too. When flying a plane I don't want to cut the power on, I have my gear down and approach flaps already set and get nice and slow ready to descend. It is still a pretty steep descent, but already...

    Winter IFR currency vs icing

I don't mind flying near or at 0c as long as I know there is assignable altitude below me if I see any ice. I do not see "going up" as an optional escape in a single engine. So much of a hint of ice and I'm out of there. I know people that regularly fly in ice and I just want nothing to do with...

    Norcal Approach

I have always viewed the local altimeter from the controller as informational, not necessarily an instruction. It is not a mandatory readback. When going cross country it is really convenient to not have to tune the local weather (or now, press buttons on the gtn) to get the local altimeter...

    Poor ATC moment

That instruction to turn base has from a different controller, likely the supervisor. At that point I was well outside of their airspace and I think he somewhat gave that instruction without knowing where I was. The instruction to enter base didn’t make sense. I wish KCCR was still in liveatc...

    Poor ATC moment

Had an interesting experience today to share. I was arriving to Concord, KCCR, from the Northwest, around the vallejo area, in a Bonanza. Called tower and was instructed to enter a left base for 1L. I thought a 45 entry to the downwind was more appropriate but seemed harmless enough to go...

Have you ever flown a (real) published missed approach to a hold?

Returning home from Southern California once I did 2 approaches to minima on the LPV approach which goes to 250 feet agl and 3/4 miles. It was real foggy leading up to the runway and just like a 300 foot overcast about halfway down the runway, very strange. diverted to another airport since I...

To GPS or not to GPS

I have a 79’ Archer II Is it worth what I put into it, Not even close. Do I have a plane that has all the goodies, makes 128 knots, and is cheap to fly, you bet. Would I do it exactly the same if I could do it again? No, I would have spent the extra 10k on a new autopilot. Do I want a Bonanza...

    KVCB- whats the frequency?

Well in this case it was me not bothering to look at the NOTAMs. I have the most updated sectional. Sort of needed around here right now since they just made major changes to the Class B. You would think a change like that would get a little mention at the end of the ASOS but at the end of the...

    KVCB- whats the frequency?

I went to Vacaville yesterday and tuned into 122.7 . After my first call a guy gets on the radio and says nut tree is 123.05. Now when I look for a frequency I look on the sectional or use the one on my gtn. Since my GTN is two months out of date, I don't really trust it so I got 122.7 right off...

Night Flight: How Should I Go About Getting Better

Did a flight last night. 4 miles vs haze at both departure and arrival airports. Chose to fly IFR because of lack of a horizon. I wouldn't want fly VFR at night unless it was extreme clear. Just start flying at night and get comfortable, when in doubt, bring an experienced friend or stay home

Piper cherokee W&B front seat ARM

So a post on a Facebook forum brought up a Cherokee 140's "problem" that the weight is too far forward when two large people are up front. This was brought up saying that the arm changes based upon seat position. With seats all the way back, as would be the case with larger people, the problem...

Purchasing an airplane just for parts?
