BS in Aerospace Engineering - Now wants to be an A&P

Should I call it poetic justice? My youngest daughter is going to go to Aeronautical engineering school starting this spring. An older brother worked as an engineer for Beechcraft for about 25 years and did well. I thought that was what I wanted to do when I was younger. I do think I would...

BS in Aerospace Engineering - Now wants to be an A&P

I say go for it! After 2 years as an A&P I wanted to go get a BS in Aeronautical Engineering and before that the airlines. I really can't say why I didn't do it, probably just lazy. All I can say is I'm glad I never did. With a lot of luck and a huge amount of work being a lowly A&P IA I got...

Piper Malibu Down near Dubuque, IA

No good. If this keeps up we may have our worst year in the history of the PA46. I knew a previous owner of this Malibu it was a good airplane.

How much do you spend per month on flying?

I wouldn't know. My wife pays the bills. It's amazing how much it costs just to sit in the hangar.

    Cessna 400

For your trips you should really consider a PA46. Find some time and fly over to my old shop at KHUT, now called Midwest Malibu center. Tony could show you about any model to get a feel for the Malibu. I think there are at least 6 based at Jabarra too. My old Malibu lives there now.

cessna 310 land gear cracks questions ??

It's been way too long ago to remember the Cessna SB that was their fix for the cracks. It was from the mid 70s and do remember it took a lot of work. My father's 310 G required removal of some of the nacelle skin to drive rivets.

    Based in Vermont

I live close. I'm staying most of the year in NW MA on the VT/ NH lines. I keep my plane at KEEN. someday I will find time to get me and my airplane up to date and see some of the northeast. The wind doesn't blow all of the time and I will take the cold winter as long as I can get more of...

    Why Did you stop/start ?

I got my PP in 1977 stopped in 1984 for marriage then kids, money, and building a business. I started back up in 2006 after buying the Malibu and 172. you might say I'm stopped today. I haven't had the time to get a physical, flight review and finish the annual on the 172. I hope I find time soon.

    Isolator sag on dynafocal mounts

I wish I could help. I even have a hoist in the back of my truck right now but I'm in Ohio for the week and going back to MA. I've often wondered if rotating 180 degrees would work. I really can't believe how often I find the shock mounts installed in a reversed order, even from our dealers and...

How many of you have had an engine failure?

Never had one fail in flight. I did have to shut the RH engine down on short final for a single engine landing with my fathers 310L many years ago. The throttle cable broke and the engine stayed at cruise power setting.

Malibu down near Erie airport, Colorado

Very sad. 5 people lost! The MMOPA talks like the accident occurred during a go around, that should explain why the gear is up. I don't know the owner on this one. It also looks like he's had it since the first of the year. It's been a really rough year for the PA46 fleet.

Does this picture show corrosion/pitting in a cylinder?

Looks like typical corrosion that I see on many TIO540 cylinders at pre-buys and annuals. I wouldn't do anything unless you have high oil consumption.

    Botson Logan airport tire change

The FBO does not offer any service. Maybe everybody took an extra long weekend and wouldn't come over from some of the area airports. We're living out here in NW MA most of the time so it was only a 2 hour trip for me. I helped this owner with the pre-buy and the two annuals since purchase...

    Botson Logan airport tire change

I got a call late yesterday afternoon from a Jetprop owner stranded at Logan with a flat main tire on a busy taxiway. The airport managed to get it moved over to a less busy taxiway. I got to Signature at 7:00 at night and out to the airplane through security by 8:00. New tire and tube on by...

How common is turbo damage caused by ice ingestion?

Descend if possible to stop the icing, richen the mixture if the TIT is rising or the engine wont run smoothly LOP. This really hurts on the PA46-310P when you can't descend and you are forced to bring the fuel flow from 16 GPH to 21 GPH. You might be looking for a fuel stop. Preventive...

How common is turbo damage caused by ice ingestion?

Normally no cylinder damage will occur with a failed turbo compressor. The inlet system and alternate air box has been an issue since 1984. We started off damaging the turbos with pieces from the flapper valves in the induction air box breaking apart and trashing both turbos. Piper issued...

How common is turbo damage caused by ice ingestion?

It happens a lot on the PA46 series. The whine is always the first sign. With the PA46 they recommend that you don't touch the door after selecting alternate air until you are on approach or have landed. Ice will build up on the back side of the air filter in even the lightest icing. If you...

IA Refresher Course OAK Oct. 2014

I always meet the renewal requirements but I still try to attend the day long seminar. Some are better than others. I do think it helps to reduce the number of vendor speakers. I always walk away with something that helps me. If I am nearby I'll try to attend. The FAA just doesn't put the...
