This came under the “Closed/Unsafe Conditions” category and just want to be sure I understand what it’s saying: RWY 28 CLSD TO PLA AND LDG 1710251346-PERM So it’s saying runway closed to low approach and landing, but what exactly is that?

Coming from a student, try to have fun, and act like your interested in teaching. Can't tell you how many instructors I've had who were browsing their phone and essentially just along for the ride.

I would just get him a real logbook even if its just to monkey around with. A basic one from Sporty's is like $12 and it might wow him that he's writing time in the real deal. It would be a cheap thing to keep that excitement going.

That's a great way to look at it. If you feel you have to get back and theres no other option I wouldn't risk it. Such is life being a lowly renter where you might be charged for time lost if you keep the plane past your allotted slot. Makes the get-there-itis feeling just a little stronger.
