    Value of AGI rating?

Thanks for all the replies... To be clear, I'm not looking to make a career out of ground instructing - just feel like it's a good way to give something back to the aviation community, so the money isn't important to me. I've already had a career - I just like to teach. Still, the local flight...

    Value of AGI rating?

I'm a private pilot that's considering going for an AGI rating, and I'm curious what people think about the value of being a ground instructor. I'm not really interested in being a full-blown CFI - I don't have a commercial certificate, and I don't think I'd be able to keep up with the CFI...

Studying for written exam, L/D best glide confusion

Yes, your airspeed indicator should keep working fine in an engine outage, but there are cases where this might not be true. An example might be a glass panel where the primary airspeed indication goes out when the PFD goes out. Even if there's a backup, it's probably not in the best position...

Studying for written exam, L/D best glide confusion

Your post reminds me to suggest that we should all be familiar with recognizing the best glide attitude visually. With an engine out, you'll have no AI or DG (assuming they're vacuum), and in an extended descent, your battery might not keep things like panel lights running all the way down...

Studying for written exam, L/D best glide confusion

Best glide varies with weight. The number in your POH is usually the number at max gross...at lighter weight, best glide would be lower. Best glide is how you get max range or distance after something like an engine failure. You need this speed if your goal is to get every inch of distance to...

    Flight simulators for IFR training

Just wanted to put in a plug for X-Plane 11... One of the cool things is that you can have multiple computers synced over Ethernet and driving multiple monitors. In my setup, I have a pair of Mac minis...one connected to a 34" Dell widescreen monitor, and one connected to a 65" monitor mounted...

    total electrical failure this morning

Just wanted to add something I haven't seen mentioned regarding the flaps... In a 172 with electric flaps, I'd think long and hard about whether to even try to extend the flaps with any sort of compromised electrical system, and I don't think I'd consider anything more than 10 degrees. It would...

    Prop surge on PA28R-201 Arrow?

Mechanic took a look and found nothing wrong and I went on a short flight and it seemed fine. I hate intermittent problems. One thing that turned up is that the aircraft was washed just before I flew it on the day it was acting erratic. The FBO has a couple of kids that wash planes, and they...

    Employee microchips

This is old news...from 2004: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2004/jun/10/onlinesupplement1 As I recall, the idea took hold for a while in several European cities, and I once saw a working example in Hamburg. It was free, and the benefit was that you could link a credit card to your RFID...

Basic Med may not catch on

Took me almost nine months to get my SI after not flying for several years and turning borderline diabetic, even though the AME was happy with my results and I filed reports from the specialist that treats me stating I was fine to fly. It seemed perverse to me that an FAA doctor in Oklahoma City...

    Prop surge on PA28R-201 Arrow?

I flew another airplane with the Horizon - not sure I liked the digital-only display...I felt like I was always overshooting or undershooting the setting I wanted unless I really fixated on the tach. The EI seems better, though I haven't flown with one. Or, perhaps it's time to spend a little...

    Prop surge on PA28R-201 Arrow?

Yes, that's exactly my thinking...even a 50 RPM drop during run-up is noticeable, yet the tach surge I saw wasn't at all audible. But I am concerned that the tach seemed fine at high RPM during takeoff/landing with the prop full forward, and at really low RPM when taxiing on the ground. I'm also...

    Prop surge on PA28R-201 Arrow?

That's what has me thinking it's some sort of instrument error...I did take off my headset, and I couldn't hear any change at all.

    Prop surge on PA28R-201 Arrow?

No change at all to oil pressure as the prop was surging - it was right in the middle of the green arc, exactly where it always is. I couldn't detect any visible movement of the needle. Oil was maybe half a quart below full when we left, and it seemed no different when we returned an hour...

What a terrific resource this site is...late on a Saturday night and already got five opinions after barely an hour.:)

    Prop surge on PA28R-201 Arrow?

I'm a fairly new Arrow pilot, and on a recent flight I noticed the prop surging about 50-100 RPM at cruise. I had fairly low power set - 23" and 2300 RPM - and the prop would surge up to about 2400 for less than a second, then settle back to 2300 where it would just repeat over and over. Same...

    Understanding maintenance cost?

Once I actually take the plunge, I'll probably manage maintenance as you describe, but that's not my immediate concern. To borrow your auto example, there was a time when a luxury car buyer could choose between Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar - with huge differences in quality and maintenance...

    Understanding maintenance cost?

This is an interesting point and I'll be first to admit that I lack the experience to offer a definitive answer...there are certainly large parts of an airplane that probably cost about the same whether Mooney or Beechcraft - replacing an IO-550 seems roughly the same no matter what airframe...
