Piper Arrow II vs III (+ Turbo or Not...?)

I flew one of the new (2002) Arrows for a while...wasn't super impressed. It flew well...about 130-135...but it really seemed to have maintenance issues. In one six month period, it needed hydraulic lines, a prop governor, avionics repairs and an autopilot servo. Aside from the cost, it was...

    Annoying blue circle

After the flight home on Thanksgiving, I put the plane in the hangar and went home feeling a little under the weather. Turned out I came down with a nasty cold and didn't fly again for maybe ten days. When I was finally ready to fly again, I went to the airport to find that one of my fuel drains...

What does POA think of the David Clark DC One-X?

I love mine. I have one, plus a Bose A20...the Bose it probably quieter, but I seem to hear ATC better with the DC, especially higher pitched voices.

    Garmin FlightStream 510 questions

I just checked - I have a database subscription only and that seems adequate to push updates into the aircraft via the FS510. It may be that my subscription included some of Garmin Pilot or was part of some special promotion, but only the DB functions seem to work. Certainly worth a call to...

    Garmin FlightStream 510 questions

I have a FS510 and the wireless database updates are perhaps my favorite feature. I have three units that would need card updates - 750, 650, G500 - and the convenience is terrific, plus I can do my updates anywhere there's a network. I love ForeFlight, but I'm happy to keep a (free) copy of...

How to know who to contact for departure clearance?

I had a funny case of this departing from a rural airport in upstate NY...couldn't get anyone on the radio, weather bad enough that I didn't want to take off without my clearance, and no cell reception in the area either. The FBO office had a land line, but it was early Sunday morning and they...

Anyone use a Come to you School?

I wanted to do PIC, but I had issues getting an airplane. At the time, I wasn't an aircraft owner, and I couldn't find a way to make a rental work...most of the planes I had access to came with "no flight instruction unless it's with our employee" in the rental agreement. And even if they...

178 Seconds to live VFR into IFR

How did you know there wasn’t an airliner in that cloud? Unless you’ve got an IFR clearance, you really can’t rely on the “see and be seen” thing in IMC, so it’s not just about disorientation and loss of control.

    Lying on medical

Wow - are there really 45,000 pilots with current medicals in just Northern California?

A Limited IFR Certified EFB (Like Basic Med For RNAV)

Not for nuttin', but while I agree that NDB is a dying technology, ILS still has a long way to go. Sure, there are places that are GPS only, but in most areas, you're in fine shape if you can do ILS, localizer and VOR approaches - and this is pretty cheap stuff as far as aircraft equipment goes...

How to know what’s inside the cloud

Yes, we were getting vectors to the RNAV 24 approach at KISP and were perhaps 2-3 miles outside the final approach fix (UKEGE)...that's about 7 miles to the runway. I had just been handed off to the tower and was turning to join the final approach course when it happened. In addition to wake...

How to know what’s inside the cloud

In truth, it wasn’t scary as it unfolded - I was too busy trying to fly the plane and not to become an NTSB statistic. The scare came later when I realized if the same thing had happened a few miles closer to the airport where I would have been lower and slower, the results might been different...

How to know what’s inside the cloud

It was roughly 13:50 local time.

How to know what’s inside the cloud

Interesting possibility. The spot the incident occurred was just about where V16 crosses the final approach course for the KISP RNAV 24 approach, so I guess there could have been recent traffic in the area that left wingtip vortices for me to run into.

How to know what’s inside the cloud

On a recent flight to NY (KISP), I had the scariest experience I’ve ever had in an airplane, and now I’m looking for advice from some of you super-experienced pilots on what I might have done differently. Inbound, we were at 3000’ in smooth air off the south shore of Long Island. We were pretty...

    Bose A20 question

Just an update that I heard from Bose and they are looking into it more deeply. I tried a little experiment yesterday where I downloaded some clips from LiveATC onto my phone and played them through the A20’s via Bluetooth. I had no trouble making out the female controllers that way, but of...

    Bose A20 question

I've used my A20 in several different planes with different types and brands of audio panels and radios...I haven't noticed much difference in legibility. I've even used different A20's in different planes and had the same issue, so I'm thinking it's just some sort of incompatibility between my...

    Bose A20 question

My new plane came with a few Bose A20’s, and while I generally love them, I’m having one big issue: I’m just not able to make out female ATC voices. Male controllers are fine, but for some reason, female controllers just sound slightly garbled, and it’s enough that I’m constantly missing what...

    Check my attitude

Funny, I’m barely 75 miles to your south at Cape Fear (KSUT), and things are completely different here - there’s a hangar waiting list over 100 deep, and pretty much anytime I’m flying over the airport on nice sunny days, I see a minimum of four planes in the pattern.
