    Old Carb.

Depends on the installation. The current small Continental parts book shows a plain washer, lock washer and plain nut. Maybe in a previous version it was to be safety wired, but times do change. In the picture I didn't see an exposed cotter pin hole in the studs. Maybe Continental was having...

When to refuse to do an annual.

In Canada, the annual is treated as any other maintenance. The AME only certifies the work done. And he/she is required to list open discrepancies in the logbook.

When to refuse to do an annual.

What a soap opera! If you want to use your credentials to have an "official" look at an aircraft and provide an opinion, then yes a maintenance entry is needed. Open one inspection panel, then by the letter of the law, maintenance has been performed and a certification is needed. Does it happen...

    Re-ground crank or no?

Get the darn thing cleaned and measured and NDT inspected. From there, decide what to do. It might be fine as is. It might be cracked.

    Re-ground crank or no?

Send to a suitable facility to be IRAN'ed. Including NDT. Then you will have something better than "not rusty".

The funny stuff us A&Ps find

Fuel leak in an old Thrush piston ag plane. Open the access panel and try to clean the leaking corner for sealant. Something in the way. Removed the remnants of a 2 D cell flashlight, then the batteries. Put it back together and it still worked!

    AD vs 337

Hopefully terminating action has been done long ago - within 100 hours from 1959 is a long time ago. I'd be sitting down and be doing some reading in the old logs, if available. If not, start looking at the aircraft and what is there compared to the terminating action in the AD. Ercoupes are...

    AD vs 337

I would assume the AD is for inspection of an unaltered wing. How do you determine if the spar web is cracked if it is covered over by a previous repair? Is there any reference in the previous repair information regarding the AD inspection requirements? Too vague for a proper response. But a...

What puts chips on the face of a propeller?

Check the air filter for grass, weeds, etc. Also the brakes and wheels. I wouldn't be surprised if some off airport or off runway fun was had.

    Night equipment

Interesting discussion. Isn't the G1000 equipped 172 different? The KOEL lists the strobe lights as required, but the beacon as not required. The KOEL is in the Limitations section, which is "approved" by the FAA. Not to muddy the waters more, but interesting discussion.

    Night equipment

DOH! My bad. I still think what the FAA wrote is wrong, but if that is what the letter of the law says, so be it.

    Night equipment

Hence my question of how they are listed in the equipment list. If they are supplemental or optional, the strobes do not have to work. Same with the beacon light. Some aircraft have no beacon light, just strobes. Some just have a beacon.

    Night equipment

And which light is inop? The tail beacon light or a wingtip/tail flashing strobe light? Are the strobes part of the required lighting system or supplemental? Does your equipment list show the strobes as being required or an option?

    O-200 Centre Main Bearing Failure

Harry Fenton has a few things to say about the subject. Scroll through the index, oil pressure problems are a ways down. http://www.bowersflybaby.com/tech/fenton.html Make sure the oil pump and case are in very good condition at overhaul, not just in limits.
