Is it safe to do a full throttle static run-up with cowling removed?

Why would the FAA care? Dan and I seem to like the idea of running with cowls on. Must be a Canadian thing, eh!

Is it safe to do a full throttle static run-up with cowling removed?

Right. "Engine test run as per Youtube".

Is it safe to do a full throttle static run-up with cowling removed?

Basic run up, below 2000 RPM and for as little time as possible and not on some turbocharged, fuel injected beast at warp 9 - sure. At full power of any engine - nope. Airflow is your friend. I have seen some people place the top on and lockwire the ends to the engine. Not my cup of tea, but...

Is DLC the Cure for The Lycoming Achilles Heel?

I read a long report on the Lycoming valve system history and how each fix presented new issues. IRC, the issue started at the initial design, with where the cam is located and how it is lubed and how oil gets from there to the rest of the valve train. It was an interesting read. The Skyranch...

Castle nut and pin vs nylon locknuts?

AN 320 is used in straight shear applications. AN 310 is used in shear and tension. Used most often. Each one has different torque specs. Refer to AC43.13. There are nylon locking caslated nuts that are great for control surfaces. Belt and suspenders and more suspenders! Engine and airframe...

    Compass Rose in Florida?

What exactly does "costly" mean? In Canada, we do compass swings yearly. Two people, one certified land compass and about 30 minutes typically. And a copy of the correction card in the tech record, just in case.

    Tips On Troubleshooting Oil Leak

And my point is that the US already has owners doing all sorts of non-standard stuff. "Hangar Fairies" are everywhere on the certified side! But yet OM aircraft are not allowed to mingle south of the 49th because they will fall out of the sky! OM aircraft are not allowed for other reasons. Keep...

    Tips On Troubleshooting Oil Leak

Inspect and find general area of leak. Look for drips towards the top of the engine. Clean engine down with whatever - I vote for mineral spirits/varsol. Spray isopropyl alcohol or something that readily evaporates to clean suspect area again and then dry again. Spray NDT developer on suspect...

Piper Seneca iii Prop Deice INopt, airworthy or not? IA's and A/P's?

Piper manuals are generally very detailed and give good information. I'd be checking the boots condition and resistance values against what they should be in the manual, same for the brush condition. Prop boots can be "massaged" to a certain degree to make them serviceable. Sitting outside in...

Piper Seneca iii Prop Deice INopt, airworthy or not? IA's and A/P's?

Go read the A&P rates thread. Owners control the what and when. Mechanics the how. Can't afford to fix the toys on the plane? Then don't. But don't expect the mechanic or inspector to ignore it. Those are some expensive boots, but welcome to the price to play in the ice. I've seen Senecas and...

Piper Seneca iii Prop Deice INopt, airworthy or not? IA's and A/P's?

I'd almost be more concerned about the inop janitrol than the prop deice. Janitrols need constant attention, especially the jet fueled ones. That is why Chieftains often have two, when one quits the other will keep going until on approach! Prop deice is relatively easy. Boots, brushes, timer.

    A&P Rates

I did a pre-inspection inspection on a Comanche many years ago. The gear was in bad shape, bungees hard as rock, worn bushings and linkages all over, gearbox and motor never been touched in a long time. The gear alone was going to be big bucks to get airworthy again. Mr owner mentioned that he...

    A&P Rates

Nope. If you are contracted to replace the left main tire and the right aileron is missing, that is none of your business. You fulfill your contract, do the work that was asked of you fully and properly, and move on. The owner is solely responsible for the airworthiness of his machine between...

What would you do? Balancing preventive maintenance and maintenance induced failure

I would say it depends on the engine condition and history. Are you trying to eek it out to overhaul with high consumption and low compression? Has there been any wear signs in the last three filter changes (assuming the OP opens the filter and checks for metal)? Has the engine been running well...

    Inflight Misfire

Sounds like something in the ignition system is heating up and intermittently having issues. Troubleshooting an intermittent problem is always fun! I would suggest to pull one mag and get it overhauled/replaced. Good idea to have mag overhauls separated so that they don't wear out at the same...

Comanche Eng Overhauled in 1980 but aircraft in A1 condition

Without laying hands on the machine and the logs, it is difficult to give a true opinion. Nice paint means nothing with corrossion covered up. A nice interior means nothing with screws drilled through the center section. But I do like the pic of the engine bay. Someone did some decent work...
