    Taylorcraft down California

You can clearly see that it's a bright red cylinder with a protruding tube and a round gauge. It's a fire extinguisher.

I also scoured the video frame by frame to get any sort of shot of the panel. This is the best one I found. Perhaps those of you with familiarity (@CaptainXap) with the Taylorcraft will see something interesting https://imgur.com/a/5cxCtxr

    Taylorcraft down California

Here are the main shots. Pretty obvious that he has two small red cylinders shoved up each pant leg. You can clearly see the gauge even, and towards the end you can just see the red bottom of the cylinder https://imgur.com/a/HjfAsii

    Train vs plane

i mean the main point is that LAPD did not go "by the book" and do their required standard protocol when arriving on scene, which would have been to shoot the airplane off of the tracks all kidding aside, great job by them and unbelievable situation that turned out about as well as it could have

man i just watched this mess again. from the time he stops the prop until he jumps is like a minute at best. it's the most damning piece of this, in my opinion. he really didn't even try at all to get it restarted and really forced it to make the prop stop. he could have spent 2-3 minutes...

Plane crash Gillespie Field, San Diego

i'm not at all saying the ADS-B reported 800ft was like 1500ft actual MSL or something, just trying to get a better picture of how high they really were

what is the capacity of the standard single tank behind the panel? also, the on the "Taking Off" youtube guy's channel they are saying it's obvious there was fuel in the plane and i'm not sure i understand how they can tell

    Taylorcraft down California

Does anybody have an understanding of the fuel system and that dangling hose/selector? I have seen people reference it and say things like "why is it just hanging there not hooked into the tank?" or that it "clearly has fuel" but I don't understand the indicators or what's going on.

Plane crash Gillespie Field, San Diego

has anybody looked at the metar reported altimeter setting on that night though? we just see the ADS-B reported altitude which is only pressure altitude, not the true altitude wunderground says at San Diego it was 29.95 (couldn't find KSEE specifically) so you braniacs tell me what their real...

    Taylorcraft down California

"Trevor Jacob told the sellers of the Taylorcraft that he was 'going to do something special with the plane.'" i'm sure he's going to say that he meant flying it to Mammoth to spread his buddy's ashes, but why couldn't he do that in his plane exactly? can't make this up

    Taylorcraft down California

Do you honestly believe that the federal government is going to give a YouTube personality a right to crash an unmanned airplane into a national forest? If it started a fire or hurt somebody (which it well could have) it would have been a massive scandal. Where is the incentive for the FAA/US...

Here's my big caveat, which is that I don't believe simulating or deliberately creating an emergency then gives you the right to deviate from a FAR in order to respond to such emergency. Possible deviations from FARs: 91.7, 91.151, 91.203, 91.205, 91.207, 91.307, 91.403, 91.405, 91.409...

    Taylorcraft down California

i dont know about legal consequences for cleanup, destruction of protected wild lands, endangering people on the ground, endangering himself, etc… but certainly if the aircraft was insured and he attempts to make a claim it is illegal. if it was not insured and he does not make a claim i would...

Plane crash Gillespie Field, San Diego

people keep asking this, but have you looked at the chart? it's not a straight in approach it's circling, and it only gets you to 1500' circling minimums basically at the threshold when the field is below 400' msl. if you intend to circle to land on 27R, the RNAV 17 is arguably better and...

Plane crash Gillespie Field, San Diego

I think he is talking about the Truckee crash, which was also a bizjet crashing while circling to land in marginal conditions https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/ntsb-releases-preliminary-report-on-truckee-challenger-crash/

Plane crash Gillespie Field, San Diego

Without a doubt, going somewhere else when things just are not lining up right is the best call. But you know as well as I do that when you have people waiting for you or onboard the plane, thinking that you are a "good enough" pilot to get in to a field is what creates that mental box of "I...

Plane crash Gillespie Field, San Diego

I don't think the actions of the pilot are all that surprising. He was cleared straight in for 17, didn't want it, couldn't circle to land 27R, so he canceled IFR. Given the weather at the time, visibility was quite poor and based on asking for the lights to be turned up it seems that there is a...
