    What Gear Should I Buy?

As far as the flashlights are concerned, no overkill there. You know the first one is gonna have some batteries you found in the junk drawer from 2012 and inevitably punk out on you after less than minute

    What Gear Should I Buy?

I actually have a friend who has knit me tailor-made leg-warmers, arm warmers, and a hat for flying in winter or at higher altitudes. So, I'm basically the most stylin' student in the club. What I can say about regular gear though is DON'T SKIMP. Seems like you've got a solid headset already...

    Left turns easier?

For me, the horizon has a lot to do with it. In a left turn, it seems easier to look out the front and track the horizon to help coordinate my turn. Right turns, my gaze tends to wander through the plane, out the right window, and the ball is all over the place before I know it.

    Trying not to be discouraged

Hahaha...yeah, as far as the encouragement part goes, I can agree to a certain extent. Some folks on here can be downright cruel, BUT I must say that I've also had plenty of people come to me and say "brush those guys off, they're just grouchy" and offer their own friendly advice or words. One...

some very good lessons on loss of control etc

So true. My last flight, tower at ENW said something to me while I was opposite numbers on downwind, I responded and of course got distracted, missed my turn to base and effed up my whole landing. My instructor said "fly first, talk later, unless it's a crucial emergency". They weren't even...

    NJ Flight Training

God, I love a nice taildragger. Went up in my instructor's champ again last week. So, to the OP, I'd love to encourage you to consider that as part of your training, if back country flying is what you're looking into. A tailwheel endorsement is not something that every flight school offers, but...

    NJ Flight Training

Just as a point of reference (I am not from your area nor have I ever flown around there) I remember when I began my training at an actual school based at UGN, I not only had to pay for my flight training, but also ended up paying club dues. Please don't get me wrong, I am not implying that I...

Why does an airplane stay in the air?

Airspeed and money. And burnt dinosaurs.

    Departure Briefings

It's weird that the OP mentioned that he was never trained to talk about emergency procedures as part of the briefing. My CFI taught me to do the passenger briefing SAFETY (Seatbelts, Airvents, Fire extinguisher, Egress, Talk about our flight plan, and do You have any questions for the pilot)...

    The science of being seen

Hey there geezer. It wasn't necessarily a matter of being too high when I turned, I was just all cockeyed and nowhere near the center line. So basically, I made my turn based on altitude cuz my dumb a$$ was looking at the instruments too much and not outside, so I was too low to begin with. I...

    The science of being seen

Oh yeah, John, they're out there lol. I didn't go out of my way or anything, I literally shared my new experience about being on a shorter runway and learning new techniques, hoping that most people would be cool and share their own experiences (because a good pilot is always learning). Some...

    Can a CFI tickle me?

Mine will put his hand on my ponytail and manually turn my head where it belongs because I have a bad habit of staring at the numbers when turning base to final instead of checking, then looking ahead.

    The science of being seen

Wow LongRoad--that's exactly what my instructor said! After I made that nice landing, he literally said "Good work, now try impressing the guy who's gotta sign you off for your checkride. I then proceeded to turn final too early on the next one and beat myself up about it til dinnertime. Lucky...

    The science of being seen

Haha good point tarheel. I tend to be pretty hard on myself when I fly, which I think is a good thing. And if it takes me telling myself "don't biff this, Saz, 7HE is looking at you" then hey...I guess why not? I did recognize the tail number as being one of the trainers from an airport that I...

    The science of being seen

Today was a very sporty day up at Batten international, and I'm glad to have been able to get up and down before the weather turned ugly. The airport was barren of traffic, for the most part, so my instructor and I were doing pattern work the whole time. My first few landings were waffley. Then...

Tips / Suggestions on Controlling the Weather

Tastefully sexist, so I'll let it slide...lmao Anyway, I got screwed out of flying today too. I did my best, tho. After I got done whining to my bf about it this morning, I laid in bed and pushed my palms up towards the ceiling and said "Rise, clouds...RISE!!!" It did not work...and my bf...

    Flight test

YESSSS...see? These forums would be so much friendlier if we all would just support each other sometimes. Even if someone just has a few words to say about their progress, no need to get critical lol just be a part of each other's success by being kind.

    Flight test

Hey, I pick up what you're putting down. Shuswap has some great advice. Now, if you also happen to be going for a flight test--best of luck! No need to be specific or detailed (RingLaser, I'm talking to you). Just use your training, whatever test you're going for. I love rooting for all fellow...
