Basic Med if you don't have a doctor

Most AMEs will do Basic Med. Just tell them you don’t want the FAA exam. I can’t imagine they’d have a problem with it. Mine is cheaper than the DOT guy.

Should pilots admit fault when given a PD?

Most lawyers seem to take the stance of “Just because you did it doesn’t mean you are guilty”. If I messed up, I don’t like admitting it—even to myself, but that’s what responsible people do. YMMV

    Assisted Oil Change

On the Cherokee I wrap the filter in a plastic bag full of paper towels. When I remove the filter, the oil and filter go in the bag rather than down the engine. I also put a bunch of towels below the filter since the hole drips after the filter is removed.

    Santa Monica (KSMO) METARs missing

As of 1:22 on Sept 26th KSMO is not online. KSBP and KVBG are online. KSBA and KSZP offline. I think Santa Paula KSZP usually reports METARS and it is offliine. Whiteman KWHP is 147 minutes old. Travis AFB KSUU is 145 minutes old so I don’t think it only affects LIDs starting with S. ForeFlight...

    Santa Monica (KSMO) METARs missing

I’ve been seeing the same thing intermittently for KSBP with either no reports or delays. Right now it (and KVBG) hasn’t been updated for 77 minutes while others are 22 minutes. I doubt if it’s anything nefarious here but you never know with KSMO.

    Dui 2 years ago

Tantalum, it’s even worse than that. A standard 170 lb FAA person would have to consume 8 beers or shots, or a bottle and a half of wine in a short time to get that alcohol level. Reduce BAC by 1% for every hour after the drink. Just looking at my EAA members, I’m guessing most men are closer to...

    Why is my fuel green?

The bowl is not glass, so a reaction with light isn’t likely. The fuel in the bowl was only in there for three weeks and since the fuel in the tanks was the right color, age isn’t a factor. Water wouldn’t affect the color and it definitely wasn’t Jet-A—no greasy residue. I’m going to go with...

    Why is my fuel green?

My Cherokee sat since March while I tried finding an A&P to do the anuual. I finished the annual at the beginning of August and flew three times in August. Before I flew on the 31st, I filled the plane and it has been sitting on the ramp since then. Fuel color was normal. Yesterday the fuel in...

    The watch made for pilots

Can someone explain the logic behind this sequence of events? 1) This product is perfect for me. 2) Lots of people like it, since it is perfect for them too. 3) Sell mine (at a loss) and buy and inferior product. 4) Profit?

Hypothetically speaking ... SI type event while on Basic Med?

I’m not aware of anything in the FARs but AC 68-1A does say: 4.5 Care and Treatment by a Physician. Pilots flying as PIC under BasicMed must be under the care and treatment of a physician5 if the pilot has been diagnosed with any medical condition that may impact their ability to fly. and...

Hypothetically speaking ... SI type event while on Basic Med?

If you have most of those conditions you may not fly until you get a 3rd Class Medical Special Issuance. I don’t see diabetes on the list. I don’t know if Angina Pectoris falls under the heart conditions listed—but it probably does...

Finding Out Restricted Airspace Status Ahead of Time

Continuous doesn’t actually mean continuous. I regularly fly through R-2516 which is marked as continuous but is rarely hot on weekends, evenings, and holidays. R-2517 says the same thing but is always hot. I haven’t flown to Las Vegas lately, but the restricted airspaces in the Trona gap are...

PA 28 Student pilot 350 lbs

I don’t know about the structure, but you are going to have a really hard time getting the forward CG in limits on a Cherokee. I tried it with mine and with a 170 lb instructor, 30 gals of fuel and 140 lbs of ballast in the back you just barely make it. W&B

Covid Vaccine Poll - How Long Will You Wait?

I am a big fan of vaccines—just got my Shingrix, Super Flu, and Pneumonia shots last week. I’m getting my TDaP booster in a couple of months when I get the second Shingrix shot. I’m not getting any COVID vaccine unless it is approved by another country first or we get an FDA director we can trust.

    Unable to Solo, Advice needed

Since you are having trouble with so many areas, it could be that, like me, you don’t multi-task well. What you may need to do is master each part of landing separately, then combine them together. If you airport isn’t busy you can do these exercises over the runway, but when I am transitioning...

    1969 Cherokee 140 cruise speed??

I have a 1968 Cherokee 140 with the 160 HP Lycon conversion, no gap seals, and don’t have my wheelpants on. I am not usually in a hurry to get anywhere so I run lean at the top of the green. 110-115 kts is normal ForeFlight groundspeed at 5-6,000'. Airspeed indicator is rarely more than 110 MPH...

What’s your source for Piper parts?

Surprisingly enough, AirCraftSpruce carries a lot of Piper parts—not just consumables like brake pads and oil filters. Exhaust: Aerospace Welding https://awi-ami.com Hoses: Heber https://www.herberaircraft.com/prod_hoses.php Misc parts: Desmoines Flying Service...

    Piper Cherokee 140 exhaust question

I have a quick-drain installed on my Cherokee and never remove the bottom cowl when doing an oil change. I only remove it at annual time since it is almost impossible to remove the bolts for the alternate-air shroud without removing it.
