Those "suicidal" passengers were sure boogeying for all they were worth to get away from that burning airplane!

    Plane crash on FL freeway

I haven't heard anything yet from my friends who may have some inside information on this. The FAA issued a statement to the effect that the NTSB would be doing the investigation, but, other than that, nothing "official" yet. Of course, my initial thought on a simultaneous engine shut down was...

Off airport operations, where is it allowed?

Basically, you can land anywhere you want in an emergency and not be subject to government fines or other penalties; however, regardless of emergency status, the land owner can levy fines/landing fees at their discretion and can impound the aircraft until fees are paid. Details may vary...

    Alaska Airlines explosive decompression 1/5/23

I'm no engineering genius, but the design called for the bolts to be in place. If I understand things properly, only one bolt needed to be in place to prevent the door shifting and no longer aligning with the structural lugs. It seems to me that a quick glance at the door lugs would have seen...

From what I've read about Boeing/NASA's Truss-Braced wing concept, probably ... no. It's a hybrid, and that technology is still not ready for commercial service; mainly because the battery technology is still not up to the task. What Boeing needs, in my opinion, is a mature design that can be...

    Alaska Airlines explosive decompression 1/5/23

Both the loss of the nose wheel tire/wheel and the wing panel bolts are maintenance-related problems, not design problems and should not be attributed to design deficiences on the part of either Airbus or Boeing. Just my opinion.

    Alaska Airlines explosive decompression 1/5/23

I think Boeing is way over due to phase out the 737 series of aircraft with its short landing gear and awkward engine placement. Of course to remain competitive, Boeing should have started on a clean sheet design years ago. I think that Boeing has painted itself into a corner and its options...

What's a SIL? I realize that his is a Pilots' Forum and that Pilots need to abbreviate everything possible when copying clearances, weather etc.; however, this is just a fun forum (Friday Joke Day), so let those like me get the joke right away instead of having to rack the remains of my brane...

That is absolutely true; however, while accountants should be near the top of a corporate organization, they should never, ever be in control. That's because accountants are more concerned about the "bottom line" than the "product line". The "product line" is what either makes or breaks a...

    Top Gun 3

I enjoyed Top Gun Maverick and thought that it was much better than the original Top Gun, which I also enjoyed. The cockpit scenes it Top Gun Maverick were the real deal, flown in the back seat of F/A 18 Super Hornets.

    Top Gun 3

The plywood German Albatros D.1 flew in WW1 and pre-dated the Mosquito by several decades. The Mosquito is one of my favorite aircraft designs of WW 2. With the exception of the awkward-looking canopy structure, it just looked "right".

    Alaska Airlines explosive decompression 1/5/23

The point I was attempting to make was that this apparently was not an engineering failure. Interior images of the opening reveal undamaged lugs, indicating that not all (if any) of the mounting bolts had been installed. This apparently was a problem concerning Boeing's manufacturing process...

    Alaska Airlines explosive decompression 1/5/23

How many aircraft are flying with this panel/door design, and how long have they been flying? I'm not sure we can blame Boeing engineers for this particular failure.

If someone had occupied that seat and hated using the seat belt during cruise flight, the seat was certainly vacant after the window blew out.

the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

'Tis said that quote originated in a 1949 Bogart movie, "Knock On Any Door", but was often regarded as having originated with James Dean. Many others including Grace Slick were also advocates of this philosophy. Like you, those are no longer options for this old fart.

Nah, getting old is great, but it's not for sissies. I think we've all known a few folks who weren't lucky enough to get old, but who died young.
