Yes I tried it on a recent flight and it worked. I briefed my friend on the planned departure procedure/transition and he was impressed when the plane actually did it.

I believe that is correct provided there are no caveats for the particular approach. You will need to be prepared to fly the missed approach etc without using the GPS of course.

Since I work M-F I’d most likely be agreeable to splitting ownership with someone who mostly flies during the week. I’m not really sure how to find such people at your location though. Lots of asking around I guess.

I always check for NOTAMs in the faa.gov NOTAM page (unless major change in plans mid-flight but that hasn't happened to me much yet).

It looks like all the major Potomac TRACON airports have a similar NOTAM pointing to the associated letter (BWI, MTN, ESN, FDK, JYO, HEF, HGR, MRB, RIC, CHO). I don't know what percentage of approach facilities do this, but it's a good idea.

If today I was planning to fly some practice approaches into KESN, I would check the NOTAMS for KESN. There is a NOTAM right now which points you to the appropriate letter to airmen, so checking NOTAMS will help for some ATC facilities. I wasn't saying checking NOTAMs is exhaustive, just that...
