How good or bad were you in early instrument training?

Scan... scan... scan... When you catch yourself looking at any instrument, scan... scan... scan... Never stop scanning.

[NA] Anyone live in Homer, AK?

Well, I've lived there since 81, Does that count? Matter of fact, I was just in the land of the Homeroids last week. No one said it wasn't beautiful there, but there's a whole lot of Alaska that's nothing like Homer, and just as pretty if not more. The point we were making is a lot of...

[NA] Anyone live in Homer, AK?

Keep in mind, Homer is not 'Alaska'. EDIT: Never mind, I see @Zeldman already told you that.

    Chem Trail Spraying

Ya'll know why those Montana sheep ranchers only wear Levi 501 button-up jeans? Because sheep can hear a zipper from a mile away!

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

You're giving him the benefit of the doubt that he did plan it, but the fact is, you don't know. None of us do. Just because he reported that he was "climbing above the layer".. does not prove he hadn't already busted into the clouds and then decided he better report it. The bottom line is ...

It doesn't matter, people are just speculating, and sometimes there's lessons to be learned in that.

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

I just came across this on Accuweather... "Former safety manager and pilot at Island Express Helicopters Kurt Deetz told the AP that Zobayan had previously told him that he did not have experience flying in clouds despite the certification"...

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

In my opinion, the knowledge and experience to declare an emergency is not going to help him in any way until AFTER he has committed to IFR and is flying the aircraft under control. There is NOTHING more important than flying the aircraft. NOTHING! Coms can wait, and there's nothing they can...

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

To keep my comment you quoted in to context. Here's the rest of it. However, it is entirely possible he went IIMC first, then called to say he was going to climb on top, then with all the distractions going on, including the radio, did not perform his scan, got spatial disorientation, and...

    My plane turns 50

That's too old for you to be flying around. You should probably give it to someone older, someone who can really appreciate it. You know, someone like ME

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

There are reports, including the one from Jennifer Homendy of the NTSB, stating that the pilot radioed that he was climbing above the clouds. Has anyone heard the audio of this or know where this originated?

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

Low level in deteriorating conditions at the speed he was traveling, surrounded by terrain left him with very few options. just my opinion from someone who's been doing this for awhile.

Kobe Bryant dead in helicopter crash

It's very possible he was not prepared to enter IMC. I know others will point out that there are reports that he said he was going to climb through the clouds to go 'on top'. I've not heard this recording, but accepting the reports for now. However, it is entirely possible he went IIMC...

    Cherokee Six down in Alaska

Wow, that brings back memories. Was there a few seasons hauling geologists and miners. Worked from Crooked Creek on the Kuskokwim to Dillingham, and Bethel to to the Shotgun Hills. I think it was 04 when they had some bad fires there. Couldn't see 1/2 mile. Good times. Condolences to all.

    radio license from "ARROW"

We have VHF and UHF radios in the helicopters. It's fun to plug in the freqs for a local repeaters while flying cross country. For some reason people get a kick out of talking to aircraft.

Many HAA operators have them now to. I used to hang my hat over it so they couldn't see me doing barrel rolls.
