Any advice for new pilot flying with family?

OK. Now you’re just showing off. (You have reason to, of course — so that’s OK.)

Any Updates on the FAA proposal to allow instruction in ELSA aircraft?

The latest I can find is a posting of 97 comments about the NPRM. https://www.regulations.gov/docketBrowser?rpp=25&so=DESC&sb=commentDueDate&po=0&dct=PS&D=FAA-2018-0926 I too don't find any indication of the status of this. But I've emailed the FAA official in charge of this docket to see if I...

    Recommended PC for Xplane?

I’m using this: https://xforcepc.com/english/platinum-html.html It works great for me with the scenery etc. set on highest detail. If you’ll be using PilotEdge too, get a headset with separate mic and earphone plugs. (Single “phone” plug didn’t work for me, nor did a splitter.)

    Anyone messed themselves in annual?

Plane owners keep track of what they spend on maintenance. Parents do not keep track of what they spend on maintaining their children. If parents did, it would be the end of the human race, because children are even more expensive than planes. When my daughters were in college, I dealt with this...

    Where is the MAP?

This discussion reminds me of Dan Brown's novel "The Da Vinci Code." The novel was great. This discussion was equally great. But shouldn't approach plates be more easily understood than the Da Vinci Code?

    Hangar damage

Insurance is a bet, in reverse. The insured bets that something bad will happen. The insurance company bets that it won’t. In your case, the insurance company won. Unlike losing bets in Vegas though, you’re happy the insurance company won. I, of course, am pleased for you too. Keep placing that...

Anybody fly in to Zamperini (KTOA)?

An excellent suggestion! There is however a risk in doing this. You’ll be offered a demo flight, and then — no matter how much you like your current plane — you’ll want to buy one.

Anybody fly in to Zamperini (KTOA)?

If you’ll be arriving from the north, fly over LAX through the LA Special Flight Rules Area. It’s easy and fascinating. No clearance is necessary, but you have to be at 3500’ (going south) and on a designated LAX VOR radial which you can mimic by using SMO and VPLSR as GPS waypoints. Also...

    IFR three approach interpretation

If an ILS approach and a LOC approach are not different kinds of approaches, wouldn't that mean that the required instrument cross-country could not be done in a plane that has only a Nav/Com radio, i.e., no GPS? With a Nav/Com radio, a pilot can do VOR, ILS and LOC approaches, but nothing else...

Good learn to fly book for a kid?

“How to Land a Plane” by Mark Vanhoenacker (the author of “Skyfaring”). 58 pages of well written plain English, in a conversational tone of voice, about an entire flight (not just landing).

Light Sport Aircraft that are IFR

Stan, Thanks for this. I read an earlier article by Dan Johnson about Bristell, but that article didn't spell out the ELSA-registration procedure for flying a Bristell IFR in IMC. The earlier article simply said that Bristell had a way to allow pilots to do so. I agree with Dan Johnson's conclusion.

Light Sport Aircraft that are IFR

Stan, Thanks for Joe Koury's contact info. I'm going to call or email him to find out whether the committee is going to address the IMC issue soon. __________ Bell206, Your post gave me the lead I needed to find the language that some have interpreted to mean that the ASTM does not approve...

Light Sport Aircraft that are IFR

I’ve read that the ASTM standards for LSAs “prohibit” flight in IMC, but I’ve never seen the actual standard that does that, and I’ve looked for it more than once. If anyone has a copy, please post it, because as of right now, I don’t think there is any such prohibition. I’ve also read that the...

    RNAV RWY 21 at SMO

The Cirrus SR20 POH doesn't say anything at all about shock cooling or about whether pulling the power significantly in order to descend is OK or not. The POH does point out that an Engine Operators and Maintenance Manual is available for purchase; but I don't have one of those.

    RNAV RWY 21 at SMO

Good question about shock cooling. I’ve spoken with three instructors at the same flight school from which I rent a Cirrus SR20 about shock cooling the plane’s engine. One said, in no uncertain terms, that it happens and could damage the engine. Two said shock cooling damage is a myth. All three...

Thinking Ahead: Choosing a plane for IFR

I have read this, online, many times. But I’ve looked at Rotax’s owner’s manuals for all of its airplane engine models, and I haven’t found a “no IFR” or “VFR only” statement in any of them. The Rotax website doesn’t say anything about IFR flight either. Do you have a link (or cite) to Rotax’s...
