    Missing aviation niche app/tool?

Cloud Ahoy does it after the flight. I'd like to be able to create a flight plan -- on SkyVector, for example -- and then preview it on Google Earth, before I fly. Does Cloud Ahoy now do that as well?

    Missing aviation niche app/tool?

I’d like an app or desktop program that would let me open a flight plan in Google Earth and view the flight the way it would look out the windscreen on a VFR day.

    Gripe of the Day: YouTube

Do content creators get paid more if I watch a commercial rather than skip it as soon as I can? I ask because I follow several creators whose videos I like well enough to sit through the commercials IF their creators get paid extra if I do.

    Question for X-Plane 10/11 users

I think you'll like it. Keep in mind that the demo version will limit your flights to just one region -- Seattle, as I recall. Also, if you decide to spring for a new computer, a new version of X-Plane -- X-Plane 12 -- will be out one of these days. I haven't seen a release date yet. I mention...

    Question for X-Plane 10/11 users

In X-Plane 11, KSEP is depicted with just one runway -- 14/32.

    Heading or Radial after VOR?

. . . “partially given or partially heard.” Excellent distinction. I wonder how many ATC instructions are clearly but only partially heard.

How to determine status of Anacapa/Santa Cruz Warning Areas

I'd like to do a sightseeing flight around Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands at 4500 MSL. They are off the coast of Oxnard (KOXR) and Santa Barbara (KSBA) airports. The islands are within Warning Areas W-289E, W-289W and W-412. The Sectional indicates that pilots can find out whether the Warning...

    Overflying your area radio calls?

I once overflew a towered airport, 800 feet above its ceiling, and made a call to the tower to report my position, because it’s a very busy airport with lots of training being done almost all the time. The tower controller responded with a snippy “That’s not my airspace. I don’t care.” That...

Need some advice. What would I request from ATC in this case?

Good advice. I regret that I failed to heed it.

    Mice - not nice

I laughed aloud at this, and I’m alone in the room. Then I felt guilty I laughed at all, because setting a hangar on fire is not a laughing matter!

Approaching WHP VFR from the west

I'll bet this makes the VNY Tower controllers mad. The question is whether they get upset with SoCal or with pilots. Either way, your advice is important.

Approaching WHP VFR from the west

When flying to WHP from the west through VNY airspace, I’ve had Flight Following and have been handed off to the VNY Tower. The VNY Tower talks with planes arriving from the north through the Newhall Pass, and controls WHP-bound planes to avoid conflicts.

What are those tasks? I’m learning the IFR features of the GTN650, and would love to see your list.

Using flight sim for G1000 transition?

The RealSimGear G1000 is excellent. I have it and use it a lot. It does require a not-insignificant cash investment, but it’s worth it, especially by those who will continue to use it even after becoming familiar with the G1000.

Using flight sim for G1000 transition?

Using a sim to learn the buttonology of the G1000 is an excellent idea. I haven’t tried MSFS, so I can’t say how realistic its G1000 is. But I do use X-Plane’s G1000 — in a C172 and lately in a Cirrus — and I can tell you it’s very realistic. It does everything a real G1000 does that I consider...

    Noob seeking advice on SLSAs

“Rotax is also a limitation. The typical 912 engine is not certified for IMC operation” I have seen this statement online many times, but no one has said what Rotax or FAA document makes it so. I have searched for such a document and have not found one. I can’t find a Statute or a Reg or a...

    Noob seeking advice on SLSAs

The RV12iS can be equipped for IFR flight — meaning flight under instrument Rules. But it can’t legally be flown in IMC — not even through a thin layer of morning fog. In my experience, finding an A&P who is familiar with Rotax engines is essential. And finding one who is familiar with the...
