Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

One more thing....I really have a great appreciation of ADSB traffic that is now available in the cockpit. I admit to being old - 56 years old and I got my PPL back in 1981 when I was 17 and while the instrumentation was good for the time, it pales to what I have in my panel now. And yes, as...

Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

Again - no calls from anyone attempting to break in on the downwind and air space above the field was clear both visually and on the panel. I was not sure if they saw me or what they were going to do. You always fly away from converging traffic to the clear space. I get it if they are...

Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

In my case (OP), I broke off by going into an immediate climbing bank to the left towards the field (remember - I had planes coming in at me on a 45 from my right and I was not sure how they would react). The safest place to be in a situation like this (several planes at pattern altitude on a...

Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

Garmin GTN 750 with a GTX 345. Very easy to see the whole traffic situation with this set up. I have to say, since I got my PPL in 1981, I really have come to embrace the new technology that we have now. I do not fondly remember "the good old days" other than the fact that it was fun being 17...

Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

Where did I say I was not looking out of the window? Without looking at the panel, how else can you determine traffic in a 10 mile radius of the airport? I think I finally get it - you were one of the ones in the pattern.

Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

What I meant was that there was no opening for a 45 degree entry to a downwind anywhere near the field. There was a solid line of planes on a left downwind. The reason for the long line of downwind planes was that the Young Eagle flights were being routed to a waypoint four miles south of the...

Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

In this case the Airport Manager was the organizer of the fly-in. I don't really know if that is the correct hierarchy to take it to, but since he was the "leader" of the fly-in I figured I would start with him. I can assure you that several other pilots went to him also.

Gary - I understand no radio if you are in an airplane that does not have one. But these were planes that obviously had radios. I have been to a few of these things over the years (small ones, not the "big" nationwide ones) and I guess I was just a little naive over how little regard to safety...

Fly In - day after reflection on idiots in pattern

I have attended and landed at several fly-ins - including Oshkosh. Yesterday I attended a local fly-in at Rusk County Airport (KRFI) in NE Texas. What I saw in that traffic pattern bordered on insanity and alot of just plain rudeness. And it almost ended tragically for a friend of mine flying...

Well.....good point! It could be pried out of my hands!

    Beech Sport 411

I have a 1981 Sundowner and have not been able to bring myself to sell it even though I don't fly it much anymore and have moved on to another primary airplane. In my opinion, you should look for a Sundowner with the O360 180hp engine, or even better a Sierra with the 200hp IO360. This is a...

(Rockwell, North American, whatever) Commander 114/115 grass strips?

Exactly. Notice in my signature line that I own two airplanes - a Commander 114B with the trailing link carrier plane landing gear and also a Beech Sundowner with the infamous "donut" (as in Mooney) rubber biscuit landing gear. I honestly don't know how a pilot could mess up a landing in a...

    Whatever happened to the AC-114?

Good looking plane Gary! And flown by a heck of a pilot!!

(Rockwell, North American, whatever) Commander 114/115 grass strips?

No issues. The trailing link landing gear is ridiculously over engineered. I don't know where Rockwell pulled that design from. Way overkill.

    Whatever happened to the AC-114?

I have the "2nd round" of the AC11 - the Commander (no "Rockwell") 114B. 1995 model year. These are great airplanes and are extremely comfortable to ride in and easy to fly. I was initially attracted to these airplanes because of the pilot's side door and the fact that you don't rub shoulders...

    Awesome! Have fun with it!

Decent Ride for a Slightly Chubby Guy!

I own a Sundowner. Huge cabin - made for big pilots. Nice ones can be found for the stated budget. They are great on grass strips. They have what is arguably the best airplane engine ever made - Lycoming O360 180hp in the Sundowner and IO360 200hp in the retractable Sierra. They are 10-15...

    Uber tipping?

This is SO correct! I have found it is greatly easier and more convenient to use my airplane for travel - business and personal - since the increasing availability of Uber service in the majority of towns in the country. Don't talk to me about "courtesy cars" - they are mostly not available...

    Best “efis/pfd” for KFC200

I have an Aspen Pro 1000 with altitude select driving my KFC200. I have had it about 6 months. No issues whatsoever. In fact, the plane is in the shop this week getting my MAX upgrade. GPS is a Garmin GTN750 and yes, I love that unit. I picked it out after comparing GPS units at Oshkosh...

    Icon death watch

Design a new GA airplane and go after the "amphipious" adventure market? Talk about narrowing your target market down to the smallest possible niche. I know that they are trying to create a market, but the worst possible thing a business can do is to answer a question that no one is asking...
