PA-32 down in Salt Lake (7-25-2020)

Lately in these crashes the plane is always full. I am sad to see yet another tragedy that may have been related to w/b. Now I know we just spend lots of time speculating on speculations here but the discussion is useful. Lately I find myself weighing my passengers on a scale I bought and...

Flight review - flights against regs in logbook

In our club we do a FR every year. In over 60years our club has been around we have only had 1 fatal(due to entering instrument condt), so something is working. We justify one year because many only fly a few times a year and its good for us as a club to make sure they brush up on waning...

    Self Serve Fuel Manners RANT

KVLL a couple of years back: Helicopter (with a lawnmower engine), parked in front of the fuel pump, in 15F Feb Weather. I pull up and wait for him to refuel, but pilot is sitting in the helicopter and waives hello, while talking on the phone. I figured he had something impt. going on and...

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

Maybe 2 scans. I get it guys. Just frustrated on how many preventable crashes happen in GA, and wondering what we can do better. But I suppose its like driving a car. Someone wants to go 100mph in a turn on an ici road bad things will happen.

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

Good idea. Maybe the FAA would require the following posted on all GA planes for all passengers to see: "Passengers please note safety is too expensive, intrusive and weighs too much to talk about. You should also know the pilot can't find insurance because planes like the one your boarding...

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

I think you are wrong. ;) GA pilots are perfect, calculate W/B every time and always follow every procedure and never mistake Right for Left rudder when typing. Clearly GA passengers have nothing to worry about and clearly planes should not have anything that helps the pilots not kill...

Hot day, max load, should I use flaps on takeoff

If I may tag on your question: To the fellow experts here: What are the pros and cons of using 10 deg flaps for std takeoff in an Archer, as my club mandates for all takeoffs? And pros and cons for 1 or 2 notches - for RonP's fully loaded Cherokee 140?

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

Sadly it happens all too often. I didn't think he was a CFI. There have to be stats somewhere on how many accidents happen due to weight issues. We don't know what happen here but there should be some sort of warning device on a plane when its overweight or poorly balanced. So that at least...

;) right left... whats the difference :) Thanks, I fixed it.

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

Its possible the tanks maintained integrity. Can we read anything into the speed/climb profile? The track seems limited/incomplete on Flightaware. The one thing we can all agree on is that no one should take off in a 172 with 4 full sized adults and expect to have a safe flight.

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

It passed inspection but it does feels like a lot, when compared to the P28-181s. It puts out a lot of power on takeoff....AND I LOVE IT esp when not at full capacity. My point is that things happen faster and require more attention to detail even in the most basic high performance minivan...

Hot day, max load, should I use flaps on takeoff

Our club has the Archers std take-off setting with one notch of flaps(10deg). I often wondered why(but too lazy to ask, since I follow the established manual not the club "Expert") since the manual does not state to do that but I have a feeling its because you get off the runway quicker and...

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

I did the weight and balance estimate on my 172. Even if their weight was just at the limit (and that is assuming a mid to thin crowd..I entered 185/180/160/130 for adult males and less for female and 30gal) they would have been beyond the aft limit. No matter how you arrange them. And if a...

PA 28-235 Down in Illinois, 4 Dead, 5/31/2020

I have a friend who was a colleague of the pilot, and I only hear great things about him. This was a terrible tragedy surely and too close to “home”, for me as a pilot. I also recently learned to fly high performance airplanes and I find them to require more attention and to be less...

PA 28-235 Down in Illinois, 4 Dead, 5/31/2020

I think speculation here on POA can be healthy, and clearly thats what is happening here. The good thing, is that Its not meant to insult anyone and for the most part hopefully most are pilots eager to learn from mistakes or just share ideas. For example I never knew that PA28 have issues with...

PA 28-235 Down in Illinois, 4 Dead, 5/31/2020

Yup, like that of a wing coming off in flight due to age of plane. ;) But look at his climb speed to 5000 as low as 84kts. However I believe that it is ground speed not airspeed we see on flightaware and thats a little less clear.

PA 28-235 Down in Illinois, 4 Dead, 5/31/2020

I put what may be an expected load(of course speculative) here because some have said weight is prob not a factor in this plane that can carry its own weight: 180lbs/each for the 4 people. 50 Gal/300lbs Fuel( Capacity is 82) Baggage: 200lbs. In this scenario they are just under weight limits...

PA 28-235 Down in Illinois, 4 Dead, 5/31/2020

Just a thought..did they really have a good climb rate? I noticed their airspeed at the initial climb rate of 500fpm or so, Perhaps he thought the same way, that the plane can carry a lot of weight....and did not do a weight and BALANCE. In a PA28A I always check weight especially since its...

PA 28-235 Down in Illinois, 4 Dead, 5/31/2020

Looking at the flightaware flying characteristics, I agree with some to suggest that this may be a case of overloading rather than purely a wing failure. But the numbers are not as clear regarding that. Curious what other pilots think. I am seeing plane sustaining a proper climb rate and...
