Factor's leading to a complete overhaul?

I understand hours alone is not all that determines when an older plane may need a complete engine overhaul... so what are the factors an owner needs to look at when purchasing a used plane from the 60's? So far I have: 1) total engine hours 2) when the last overhaul was done 3) compression...

    Engine compression?

If I'm inspecting the logs for a plane I'm interested in purchasing and I find, in the annuals, the engine compression is dropping a few points each year.... how much of a concern is that? For instance: in 2017 it's 76/80 for #1, in 2018 it's 73/80 for #1 Also, how far apart can they be from...

Can I get my medical before beginning training for PLL?

Thanks for that link. Just read it through. I am set up with an appointment on the 23rd. I will have new glasses by then. I will do as the link suggests and not provide the confirmation # untill and unless the AME says I will pass. I think my chances are good I will pass. No DUI's ever, no...

Can I get my medical before beginning training for PLL?

All good advice. Thanks for the input. I want to get new glasses prior to going further. I have a standard eye chart and at 20' I cannot read the 20/20 (line #7) that well. Have been able to easily with new glasses and its been since 2015 since my last prescription, so off I go next week...

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

Understood, but I'm talking about small planes such as the PA- series Pipers.

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

Tell me something about total time hours on a plane. Am I correct that a small plane's airframe is good for only 5,000 hours?

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

Can someone who owns the 140 do me a big favor? I'll be getting my eyes checked next week for new glasses. I have a pair made specifically for computer use. All I need is to tell the doc the distance and he sets a card up and we get the eyes/lenses calibrated. I can do the same for the 140...

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

So, things are progressing nicely. I found a very decent CFI who will gladly train me in the plane I own. In fact, he has some 700 hours in the Cherokee from when he lived in Florida. Has a full time job in aviation but has four days off per week that he uses to take on students. His CFI rates...

Can I get my medical before beginning training for PLL?

Well, what's the consult going to do, then? If, say and I don't, I have heart disease, how is getting a consult going to make that go away?

Can I get my medical before beginning training for PLL?

It appears the FAA has this MedXpress system to complete the form on-line so I will go that route.

Can I get my medical before beginning training for PLL?

Is this the questionnaire you speak of? Would I want to print that out and complete it to take with me?

Can I get my medical before beginning training for PLL?

I'm 65 and wish to go back and complete my PLL started some time ago. My health is excellent, but I'd like to get cleared by am AME before plunking down $$ for training only to find out I cannot fly for some reason. Is this doable?

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

This video seems to do a very good job of explaining the wing spar issue. From what I can gather, it will apply to planes with over 5000 hours of TT and/or planes used commercially that require 100 hour inspections. There is a formula you use to compute total time if that is the case, it appears.

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

The video I watched earlier showed a 140 in flight, taking off and landing several times. What seemed to stick out was the CFI's concern each time the student came in for a landing that they were going to make the runway. They both stated how they could feel the plane dropping and it seemed to...

So I can even taxi it if I need to get gas or take to the mechanic's hangar?

Interesting. Thanks. Can I start the (my) plane up while tied down if checking things out but still do not have my license yet?

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

Here is part of that article I was referring to about the inspection being more an issue than the defect, if not found to be present. In March, the Piper Owner Society posted on its website a news report citing NTSB Member Earl Weener’s response to the AD in which he noted that “the data showed...

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

Thank you, Iamtheari, for your very detailed reply, above. Also, thanks to pilot who posted the video. That was a big help. Would plan to stop and see the country if I made such a trip. No hurry on my part. Lots of "off course" detours would be planned in and if thats gets me around weather...

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

So, this business about the wing spar may be an issue for not going forward. What they're saying is, the inspection... the work to get at it to see it... will potentially do more damage than the issue itself and on every one of the 20,000 or so planes, if it becomes required. By the same token...
