Factor's leading to a complete overhaul?

The engine would be a Continental 0-200A last overhauled by Mattituck. When you say "field overhaul" I assume you mean a small private shop located at the airfield. That would be my preference. Anyone have any idea on cost based on this common Continental engine?

    Engine compression?

So, to be clear on this... If the compression check shows a healty 73 to 76 on all four cylinders, regardless of discoloration seen inside with a camera, leave things as they are for now and keep flying. Is this correct?

Factor's leading to a complete overhaul?

I will be looking at a plane over the weekend. Bit of a trip but thats OK. Plane is a later model Cessna. Had an annual over a year ago and then parked on pavement and never flown again. Prior owner claims very meticulous. Log books will fill a trunk, he says and he will produce all of them for...

    After I solo?

He was the one who suggested it. There is another airport less than the 25 miles I'd be restricted to, so I can possibly park at. Worst case is, I park at the airport we will train out of and then move when all is said and done or at least after I am checked out on cross country. Not a deal...

    ADS-B by 2020?

Thanks. This is very helpful. Seems the best and lowest initial cost option for a small plane is that SkyBeacon unit. These other items I can do more research on when the time comes.

    ADS-B by 2020?

Thanks. Looked into this just now and a more realistic figure is a bit south of $2500 with the unit, the install, the programming, the paper work and the test fight by the installer. There is a $500 FAA rebate if done by October 2019 so you can basically get your installers time paid for if you...

    ADS-B by 2020?

Maybe I do not know th proper terminology when I refer to "coms", so let me try to clarify further. When looking at an older plane for sale, what should it have as far as radios and transponders to be FAA legal now and for the foreseeable future? Also, what such equipment can I remove and...

    ADS-B by 2020?

Agree if you live in the sticks, as this seller does, upgrading is not required. I plan to travel around the US after completing my PPL. Got the impression the seller accidentally let this factoid slip out when I pressed them on my knowing any issues with the plane that were not yet discussed...

    ADS-B by 2020?

Looking at a single with Mode C but not with ADS-B out as will be required by 2020. The seller states it's not an issue unless you fly within 60NM of a commercial airport. I cannot see how one will not find themselves in such a situation here in the Northeast if even by accident. How costly...

Tie down on grass vs asphalt

Maybe, in the dead of night, I can pull out the grass and lay in Astroturf. Will help me with the moisture issue and save the manager lots of time cutting the grass under my plane ;)

Tie down on grass vs asphalt

Like the paver idea. If the manager would allow me to do this, that might be the way to go. I would use a cover for the cockpit. See these on some planes. Especially if I go with a low wing that leaves the door vulnerable to rain. Can also fabricate my own canvas covers for the wheels. I can...

Tie down on grass vs asphalt

When I contacted one of the local muni airports about fees for ties downs the fellow gave me the price for grass and asphalt. When I asked which was better he said if it was his plane he'd go with asphalt because grass will cause more damage from moisture. The airport closest to me has only...

    Engine compression?

Actually, I did find and read those articles... but thank you. Also, read about this special orifice to calibrate/test the compression gauge. Just another issue that gets tossed around. More to confuse the buyer and perhaps also the seller and hold up the purchase for no good reason.

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

A new wrinkle... Some 140's have toe brakes, some do not and some only on the left side. I ran this by my CFI and he said (along with sending me the links to the FAA regs so I have these already) he was fine teaching me with toe brakes only on the left side but there could be an issue down the...

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

What can I expect to pay for a pre-buy inspection on a 140 if the plane had it's annual within the last, say, six months? I see where some say to "make it an annual" when you do the pre-buy. Cannot see how you can do this unless you have paid for the plane. Is there an online directory of...

    After I solo?

After I solo once or twice, am I allowed to take my own plane up on my own to ferry it from one location to another for my training with my CFI... say 30 miles or so?

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

Is there a standard form used to purchase a used plane? Something that states each others responsibilities? Also, if I find a plane I like, how to I go about holding it until I can get it inspected, etc. Is there a certain deposit amount and is it refundable should the deal fall through? Thanks!

    Thoughts on a Cherokee 140 as a learner & 1st plane

I have some more questions on the Piper 140... Apparently, the windows do not open... so just how do you get fresh air moving through this plane? Some low-wing planes of similar size and cost range have the wheels attached to the fuselage rather than to the wings like the 140. To me, this...

    How is the yoke secured?

Thanks for your serious reply, Brian Actually, I'm looking to purchase a Cessna 150 or 152 and prefer to keep what I own looking decent. I think it says a lot about a person if their plane, like their car, is a pigsty.

    How is the yoke secured?

How is the yoke secured to the shaft, by set screw or is it pinned through? I ask because so many yokes are missing all their paint.
