Congress Slams Boeing and the FAA to the Max

Probably not worth two cents, but: Boeing should move its headquarters back to Seattle and get its technical staff more involved in strategic decision making again. The C suites seem to me to be too far away from the production floor and the engineers that really understand the product and it’s...

    The Otto Aviation Celera 500L

As I understand the Piaggio Avanti, it’s the layout of the three wings, combined with the weight & balance, that greatly benefits efficiency because all three wings are lifting surfaces. Contrast that with the traditional layout where the main wing is pulling up, while the horizontal stab is...

    Frikin laser beams

Similar. It’s not fun, especially since it’s mostly a night flight thing, so your pupils are dilated. Happened to me once and the sensation later was as if I’d watched arc welding from a distance without eye protection. How can people think that’s cool?

Test generating software for ground school

I instruct part-time in a local evening ground school program. We use Gardner’s textbook, but have our own custom course syllabus that we adhere to. The program is split into three stages, with Stage Exams after Stages 1 & 2 that focus only on the previous stage material, and Final Exams that...

I’m wondering if that’s not deliberately built that way to protect the prop.

NYS driver's license "Not for federal purposes"

It should be. That was one of the points of the Real ID law; enhanced drivers licenses are the result. I had planned to finally upgrade my driver license this year. But my license expired the same month we went into lock down. I called up the state dmv and was told to apply online for a basic...

MooneyDriver - sorry, I missed your question. You are correct: yes, it does have a metal point, albeit one that is somewhat rounded. Because of this, I had to resist the urge to use the stylus until I could apply a plastic screen protector. But with the protector in place it works fine, and I...

I’ve been using this with my iPad Mini: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLQZ3W8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $22. Seems to work good and holds a charge for a long time. Although I have to admit that when I’m in a hurry to write something down I usually just use my...

In addition to the gps (which doesn’t matter much due to stratux) I use the cellular for convenience checking weather, filing flight plans, ground navigation, etc. But yes, for most of that I could just make my iPhone into a hotspot and get data service to the iPad that way. To each his needs.

    Headset Questions

If you do get a chance to try one, shut off the ANR for a moment in climb or cruise. It’ll make you wonder how you got along without it for so long. Very pleased with my Lightspeed Zulu.

I use a cell/gps equipped iPad mini-5, with a Ram x-grip and suction cup. Works good. I don’t even have to remove the iPad from the case. I think a bigger iPad would probably be too big in a 172. I haven’t had overheating problems, but I’m also using outboard gps from a stratux, so that probably...

Could you show us a picture or explain how you mounted the Ram mount to the yoke bar? Much appreciated.

    FIKI flights ok?

Yes, but gotta be careful with this. The Cascades and Sierra Nevada are a good case in point. Moist Pacific air flows inland, hits those mountain ranges and has nowhere to go but up. If you’re crossing from the east, or crossing from east and descending, your chilled sub zero airframe can plunge...

    Franklin 220HP in a 172H?

Fire-walled, no doubt. Remember, we’re talking about a 172: wing struts, rivets, hangar rash, probably no pants. The works. Actually, 130 on 10.5 gph doesn’t sound that bad, compared to probably 135 at 12-13 gph for the 182. But you’ll be a lot more comfortable in the 182.

    Wheelchair Plane Options

We all hope the best for your wife. Lots of good suggestions above. But given how most aircraft, especially low wings, tend to squat the back fuselage down a bit while on the ground, I’d have to say the Cherokee Six/Lance/Seneca or Bonanza/Baron are probably best due to minimized height. Of...

    Arizona Trip Planning Suggestions

There are several Grand Canyon area airports, from West across GC/Tusayan to Marble Canyon and Page. Also Bar Ten, with a B&B. I visited Sedona 5 months ago, it’s absolutely stunning. Study the sectional, and search the forum. There’s been discussion about many of the airports, and videos...

Steep turns and stalls from a different perspective

Perhaps, but I’ve always thought in-flight photos of RG Cessnas flying with the gear tucked looked pretty cool. (But watching video of said gear being retracted ... eh, not so much)
