Grease or Oil on Back of Prop Blades - Now with Pics!

Glad I could contribute to a good night's sleep. Of course, while they're fixing the crankshaft seals, they'll discover the crankshaft needs to be replaced... But hey, one crisis at a time, right? And don't forget, it's just a hobby. Putting off retirement to your 80's is part of the fun.

Grease or Oil on Back of Prop Blades - Now with Pics!

As I recall, he stated that a minor streaking on the back side of the blades was actually quite common and he didn't really DO anything to confirm that was the case, it was just something he was aware of being possible (oil being flung forward). There were a couple leaks, but the one that I...

Grease or Oil on Back of Prop Blades - Now with Pics!

Yup. Been there. 69 Arrow with a newly OH'd prop and governor: Found streaks on the back side of the prop, couldn't understand how a newly OH'd prop/gov would have ANY issues. A&P investigated. There WEREN'T any issues with the prop or governor. Turned out the small oil leak I had on the...

    Flying with inop alternator

As others have said, depends on the alternator and the aircraft. I lost an alternator a couple years ago. Landed at a towered airport (coordinating via cell phone while in the air) Left the battery on a charger at the FBO over night Came back the next day, called the tower, received clearance...

    Commercial Pilot Career?

Loans are unnecessary. The school wants him to go for a useless AA degree so they can get their grubby hands on the Student Loan money. An AA is worthless and serves ONLY the school's aims. Many believe (and flight schools foster this belief) that student loans are necessary because learning to...

    VOR/ILS needle oscillation

Incidentally, I had a similar issue. The avionics shop lent me a replacement CDI to test. If the oscillation remained -> radio/antenna issue. If the oscillation ceased -> bad CDI. It was a bad CDI.

    VOR/ILS needle oscillation

Sounds like "scalloping" and is a natural phenomenon. I had never heard of it either until I read my owner manual for my KX-145 (horrendous com/nav) from the 70's.

Fix up my plane or rent for instrument rating?

Exactly. This was also the same calculus I used. I decided to upgrade my own aircraft to /G for IR training. Now, my IR will cost about 3k instead of 7k. Of course, the upgrades FAR outstripped that, but I will get most/all of that back when I upgrade.

    Who let this guy solo?

A friend is currently working on his PPL and has recently soloed. He told me the other day that his instructor told him he was now signed off to fly up to 25 miles away (but not land). Is this true?! Coming into a pattern (rather than simply staying within it) is a whole different kettle of...
