Piper Cherokee leak from cylinder to exhaust?

I’m going to ask a dumb question here, though with reason. Is the aircraft able to flown with this leak here? I’m not saying 8 hours a day, everyday, but can it be flown once or twice until it gets repaired?

Piper Cherokee leak from cylinder to exhaust?

Also, is there anything in particular that would be cracking the exhaust pipes? I replaced two earlier this year. Grant it, it is a 1969 and these are prob the originals.

Piper Cherokee leak from cylinder to exhaust?

The exhaust pipe is cracked in two places? It appears the exhaust/oil or whatever it is, is all over the gasket area there also.

Took me a bit but here it is

Piper Cherokee leak from cylinder to exhaust?

Apparently it’s not letting me update a photo for some reason. Saying the file is too large.

Piper Cherokee leak from cylinder to exhaust?

It does look a bit like this but nowhere near this extent. I’m posting a pic in the next post.

Piper Cherokee leak from cylinder to exhaust?

Upon inspecting the aircraft today I observed a dark, oil looking coating on an exhaust pipe where the pipe meets the cylinder. The pipe is dry but has this new dark spot clearly coming from the joint with the cylinder. Any idea what the issue is here and what is actually leaking?

    Black exhaust soot??

Going to bump this up along the same topic. It seems as though the black exhaust staining has stopped after running it for a few hours. Upon checking the engine this morning, it appears there is a brownish type stain on a cylinder exhaust pipe where it meets the cylinder. Almost looks like...

    Black exhaust soot??

Lol. Curious what you’re adjectives are. Send them to me via a private message. I’ll entertain it. I’m new, as an aircraft owner. I asked for any help In Regards to the higher egt and black soot after a mag replacement. It somehow delved Into I need an overhaul because it was fueled with the...

    Black exhaust soot??

Lol. Man I’m new here but this has my mind blown now. You’re telling me my plane was misfueled?? So basically you’re saying, though I’ve personally watched each refueling for my aircraft, I have diesel fuel in my engine and it needs to be overhauled now? I’m pretty sure I’m not a f’n idiot...

    Black exhaust soot??

An overhaul??? Compressions were mid to high 70’s last December. Approx 450 smoh completed in 2014. What makes you believe this engine needs to be overhauled??

    Black exhaust soot??

Well this quote is incorrect. I understand leaning, how to lean, when to lean etc. I dont understand the sudden high temps on the gauge and the black exhaust which is all of a sudden after a magneto and plugs replacement.

    Black exhaust soot??

I’m guessing during startup and run up. Only two options.

    Black exhaust soot??

All bottom plugs were just replaced with the magneto. This gauge is similar to mine. I had an app look at it and said the engine is running better than ever. On this gauge, Unleaned at cruise, the engine is at 1400. It begins climbing up to the 1500 range upon leaning it out, rich of prime...

    Black exhaust soot??

So maybe I’m looking at it wrong. All 4 plugs needed to replaced, so now all plugs are less than 6 months old. I’m guessing this would make the engine run hotter and also require more of a mixture lean when could be done.

    Black exhaust soot??

Thanks. Still doesn’t help explain to me why the gauge is reading higher than it has been and the black exhaust on the wheel pant all of a sudden.

    Black exhaust soot??

Yeah that is the gauge. I saw 25 and was t sure what that meant, so thanks for filling me in. So at full rich it is running at the 8th line, 200. It normally is lower than that. I understand the red line, lean, rich aspects but the gauge is now reading higher than before after having this...

    Black exhaust soot??

Also a compression check at the last annual indicated all cylinders were mid to high 70’s. Approx 450 hours on the engine smoh

    Black exhaust soot??

Replaced with tempest plugs. All plugs in the engine are less than 6 months old now.
