    Medical certificate confusion

Thank you so much for that coherent explanation. One thing I noticed on the rules and regulations was something about not needing a medical exam if I only fly VFR, with no more than 1 passenger and within the U.S. What do they mean by no more than 1 passenger? Is the PIC considered a...

    Medical certificate confusion

Hello. I'm guessing this is the best forum to post this question in. Received my VFR private license single engine land in 1998 and flew for 4 years until it became too expensive to continue to rent. Now 21 years later I've got the bug again and want to go flying! Between 1998 I've had two...

Single engine with landing gear alerts

Wow, those videos sum it up. Distraction, distraction, distraction. You can't have it both way - hyper-vigilant on final (which can actually deter you from proper checks) and good landings. . . Me stick with fixed hear me think.

Single engine with landing gear alerts

What would account for gear up landings? Perhaps the pilots get immune to the alert? Hyper focused on landing regime?

Single engine with landing gear alerts

I have read that some single engine airplanes have alerts or even automatic extension of landing gear when there is a combination of low air speed and mixture combinations. Is there a list of these airplanes (180 - 250 hp) that provide that functionally or can some forum readers suggest such...

    Sound buffering aircraft interior

Considering some single engine aircraft in the Piper, Bonanza or Mooney line and would like feedback on which, if any, have the quietest (I know it's never quiet) interior cabin noise and what methods other than headsets, earplugs are generally used to buffer the interior sound. I mean in terms...

    Steam gauges and IFR avionics

This really looks interesting. Apparently it's sensor/electrical generator suspended under the wing which broadcasts all manner of aircraft orientation and other useful information wireless to the receiving monitor in the cabin. Pretty cool: https://levilaviation.com/thebom/

    Steam gauges and IFR avionics

Thanks all! Super educational and instructional - from everyone. Really appreciate the answers every single one of them both insightful and helpful. I just don't want to become a statistic whilst relying on technology that never fails. I'm pretty sure the people at Boeing would love to tutor...

    Steam gauges and IFR avionics

My bad I should have been more clear and not mentioned gps, full panel failure along with steam gauges in the same thread, I stand corrected. Let's just say your *entire* panel goes down - steam gauges, partial panel instruments, radios, turn coordinator, auto pilot, HSI, altitude, radio (other...

    Steam gauges and IFR avionics

And if the entire panel goes down? That's why I'm inquiring about a suggested totally separate device powered by it's own source of electricity.

    Steam gauges and IFR avionics

Hello. I'm considering the purchase of a single-engine aircraft and I know this may sound like blasphemy, but I'd rather stay with steam gauges for a while (mostly because of cost). My concern is that I know if steam gauges die in an approach, it's not a nice thing to have happen. I also know...

    Flight Service Station question

about 20 years ago when I got my private, we could call up flight service inflight and request that they make a phone call to our destination contact person advising them of our ETA. Now, I'm going for my IFR ticket (20 years later) and I'm curious: does flight service still extend this...

Garmin 430 how to deviate for weather, then return to FP

All very useful and enlightening. Thanks for the link to the sad story. So the moral of the story is be aware of terrain clearance and obstructions at all times.

Garmin 430 how to deviate for weather, then return to FP

Hello, private pilot headed into IFR ticket and can't find a video or tutorial on how to deviate for weather (or anything) when on a garmin 430 flight plan, then, after passing obstacle, return to flight plan. Is it as simple as switching to heading mode, changing heading by say a certain...
